THINK SPOT: Have you ever stopped to pick up a feather, spread it open and think about how all the colours in each feather have to ‘grow’ into place in order to perfectly line up and make their pretty patterns… right from DNA level… before even one feather has started to grow?
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Matthew 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Matthew 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are ye not much better than they?
Job 35:11 Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
Job 12:7 But ask now the beasts and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air and they shall tell thee. Or speak to the earth and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knows not in all these that the hand of the LORD has wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
BIRDS ~ SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION / GOD’S EXQUISITE DESIGNS
The Stunning Beauty of a Peacock Tail (creation.com) from scientists who take the Bible seriously; bright iridescent colours, intricate patterns and fan formation show a very sophisticated design. A single peacock eye feather (1.3 metre long) was examined under a microscope at Bristol University. They discovered nearly 1 million barbules being held together by 290 barbs. In just ONE feather!
Scientific structure of feathers (creation.com) from scientists who take the Bible seriously; feathers are complex, designed structures required for flight. These precision-designed structures are highly effective, yet extremely light, insulators that are designed to enable birds to fly. Bird wing feathers themselves are ‘one of the most beautifully designed structures in the world’. Feathers have such ‘striking diversity in size, shape, colours, and texture’ that very few human art masterpieces can compare with them in harmony of colours, liveliness and softness. Often copied but never equaled, the beauty in pattern and colours of feathers has been appreciated by humans the world over; share a snippet with your child.
The Hummingbird – God’s Tiny Miracle (Answers in Genesis) from scientists who take the Bible seriously. Did you know that these adorable birds eat the human equivalent of 1300 hamburgers a day?! :) Known for their “extremely rapid wing-beat (50-80 beats per second) and its amazing ability to manoeuvre, the hummingbird can hover, it can fly backwards and sideways, and it can fly at speeds of more than 90 kilometres an hour (55 miles per hour).” If you operated at this bird’s energy level, you would burst into flames! Share this tiny miracle with your child.
The Intricacies of Flight (Answers in Genesis) from scientists who take the Bible seriously; flight needs four things: (1) correct wing shape to give a lower air pressure on the upper surface; (2) large enough wing area to support the weight; (3) some means of propulsion or gliding; and (4) extra surfaces, or a means of altering the main surfaces, in order to change direction and speed… A feather is a marvel of lightweight engineering. Though light, it is very wind-resistant. This is because there is a clever system of barbs and barbules with hooks on one side and ridged barbules on the other. Thus an ingenious mechanism exists for keeping the surface flexible and yet intact… on either side of the barb are further tiny barbules which can only be seen under a microscope… On one side of the barb ridged barbules will emerge, while on the other side, the barbules will have hooks… The hooks and ridges act like Velcro, but go one stage further, since the ridges allow a sliding joint, and there is thus an ingenious mechanism for keeping the surface flexible and yet intact. The next time you see a flight feather on the ground, remember it is a marvel of lightweight flexible aerodynamic engineering.
The Scientific background of Shape Shifting Flocks (called Murmuration); Have you ever watched a large flock of birds doing their impression of a roller coaster and wondered how they fly so swiftly and stay so close together, morphing into different shapes? Other animals do it too, like fish and swarms of bees. This ability has puzzled scientists for a long time. Even complex algorithmic models hadn’t explained these aerobatics, which rely on the tiny birds’ quicksilver reaction time of under 100 milliseconds to avoid aerial collisions and predators. After studying flocks of starlings, scientists concluded: “… each starling is continuously computing the positions of an average of six or seven of its neighbours, regardless of how far away they are… having a pre-programmed, numeric, object-tracking ability…” Share a snippet with your older child (or a simple explanation for a younger child) about these amazing Creator designed aerobatics.

Owl in flight ~ slow motion This is superb. MAGNIFICENT! The camera is slowed down to 1000 hypnotic frames a second as the owl lands right in front of the camera. Look at the power here and how the wings subtly change shape as he comes in for landing. Aircraft engineers are amateurs in comparison to God’s exquisite designs. Be in awe of our Creator. You may like to share this with your child… enjoy!
DID YOU KNOW: All birds have their own distinctive personalities like humans and other animals. Just ask any pet owner. I once witnessed a small bird grieving for his soul mate so badly that he was at risk of death himself. He completely lost all interest in life, slowly recovering after several weeks, but he was never quite the same after that.

God of wonders DVD – listen to the awe in the voices of these scientists who take the Bible seriously. The whole documentary is fabulous but in this short segment, they discuss the wonders of flight. Birds are engineering marvels, compelling evidence for an an incredible Creator… Just think about all the controls inside an airplane needed to fly. All of that is packed inside a tiny bird. The bones of birds are lightweight and virtually hollow. Inside, they are supported by struts and honeycombed with air sacs. They are designed so efficiently that their feathers usually weigh more then their entire skeleton. Feathers are a masterpiece of design, combining strength and lightness. Some birds fly every year between the north pole and the south pole. Each species is specially equipped for their role to man and has a special area of patrol – controlling insects, removing carcasses, keeping seeds under control; keeping rodents in check; others patrol the beaches, keeping them clean. Water birds maintain the proper balance in fish population. The heron in frog and snake control. Graceful, amazing aerodynamic abilities and practical, each bird is a testimony for God’s wisdom and love. Share the wonders of God’s designs with your child.

God’s Little Ballerinas: Watch these amazing and graceful hummingbirds in flight! They are fast, can hover in mid-air, fly backwards and even upside down! This short video examines the science behind hummingbird flight. It will fascinate and delight you. Fill your mind with the wonder of God’s exquisite designs in creation and then describe it to your child.
Peeps: Baby hummingbird (too cute – I had to include this one) tell your child the heart-warming story of ‘Peeps’, who fell out of his nest, was lovingly nursed back to health, then released back into the wild. When Peeps was still in ‘hospital’, he was taken outside to get nectar from flowers. As Peter sits with Peeps cupped in his hands, Mrs Hummingbird hovers nearby. The baby calls out to mama. The mother comes closer, and then… you won’t believe what happens next! Totally adorable!
Shape Shifting Flocks (Murmuration): Two girls out for a late afternoon canoe ride unexpectedly witness a wonderful murmuration treat… enjoy.
Look at these adorable flamingo chicks in various stages of development from babies just hatched and stumbling over Mum’s feet, to the stunning adults they will become.
And finally, watch this baby bird hatching and then get a spruce up from a very busy mum… :)
And tell your child about our wonderful Creator, who made all these incredible designs… don’t forget! :)
