Are you ready for the Return of The King? (The Parable of the Ten Virgins ~ Links)

FREE The Parable of the Ten Virgins Bible Poster; Matthew 25; free printable

Are we living in daily expectation of The Bridegroom’s arrival? Does my heart skip a beat when thinking of my King’s return? Am I a believer who has chosen to keep themselves clean, prepared, and ready? Or has my heart been stolen by other things? The only difference between the ‘wise’ and the ‘foolish’ virgins in this parable that the Lord Jesus told us is that one group had oil, the other did not. What does that mean… no oil?! I have been tussling with the meaning of this parable, so let’s take a look.

THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS ~ BIBLE VERSES

  • The Lord Jesus describes the end days

Matthew 24:3-4  And as He sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you…

Mark 13:5  And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you…

Luke 21:8  And He said, Take heed that ye be not deceived…

2 Timothy 3:1-4  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God…

2 Timothy 3:13  But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

1 Timothy 4:1  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils…

2 Peter 2:1-3  …false prophets… false teachers… damnable heresies… and many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you…

2 Timothy 4:3-4  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. [Let’s take a closer look at that word, fables… click the link to see it in Strong’s concordance for yourself, but here it is…]

G3454 | μῦθος | muthos | moo’-thos | Perhaps from the same as G3453 (through the idea of tuition); a speech, word, saying, a narrative, a story, an invention, a tale, that is, fiction (“myth”), a falsehood: – fable.

Isaiah 5:20  Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Romans 3:18  There is no fear of God before their eyes.

*

  • Why the delay in His return?

2 Peter 3:3-9  Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of His coming?… The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

*

  • Get ready! And stay ready!

Matthew 25:1-13  Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

2 Corinthians 7:1  Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Matthew 24:42  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Matthew 24:44  Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

2 Timothy 4:8  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.

*

  • God has chosen YOU!

Colossians 3:12  God loved you and chose you for His own. [How awesome is that?!]

Ephesians 1:4-5  According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will…

*

  • How to get ready (if you are not already)

Romans 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God…

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

1 John 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 10:9-10  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-9  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Romans 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…

*

  • How to stay ready

Matthew 22:37-38  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

1 John 2:15-17  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Romans 6:22  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Galatians 5:22-25  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 4:7  For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

John 15:3  Now ye are clean through the Word which I have spoken unto You.

John 17:17  [Jesus talking to the Father about us] “Sanctify them by the truth. Your Word is truth.”

Galatians 5:16  Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Matthew 10:28  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ephesians 5:25-27  …Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Revelation 3:11  Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Revelation 16:15  Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments…

1 John 1:9  [Remember the Christian’s bar of soap and use it every day] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Revelation 3:3-5  …hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment…

Luke 21:36  Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Revelation 19:6-8  And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

WHAT IS A PARABLE?

A parable is simply a truth told in story form to help explain a previous truth… many good scholars see [this parable] very differently than we do. So again, be as the Bereans and see what the Holy Spirit confirms to you. –Nancy Missler

Why did Jesus speak in parables  (Chuck Missler; 10 minutes)

*

  • Read

Clean, Prepared, Ready – part 1  (Nancy Missler) …we talked about the Jewish Marriage ceremony and its parallels to the Christian life. In summary, our Justification can be compared to the Jewish betrothal. Our Sanctification can be compared to a Jewish woman preparing herself for her future wedding. And our Glorification (the Rapture) can be compared to a Jewish groom coming by surprise to carry his bride away… During the time of preparation, she remained in her father’s home, making herself ready… making her own wedding gown, getting ready for her new role as a wife, transferring her allegiance from her father to her new husband… We must prepare ourselves, just as a Jewish bride does… She must not only be presented as a “chaste virgin, not having spot or wrinkle” (Ephesians 1:4), she must also be sanctified, holy, and without blemish… there is a possibility that while we are here on earth waiting for Christ to return, we can defile our garments… Revelation 3:5 tells us that overcomers will be clothed in white garments… Let me be clear: I am not saying that a believer must be sinless. All believers sin at various times and it’s only when we confess and repent of our sin that we can once again be clean. 1 John 1:9 has to become a part of our lives: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The “holy ones without blemish” in Ephesians 5:27 are those believers who have chosen to do just that in order to keep themselves clean, prepared, and ready. They are the sanctified ones. They have continued to “put off” their sin and self and “put on” Christ. They are now arrayed in fine linen, clear and white… sanctified, holy and chaste virgins… God desires to present us to Himself a glorious church, having no surface defects, holy and without blemish. But He does not coerce His subjects; He respects our will… The million-dollar question is: What happens to those believers who are not ready, not prepared, not fit, not holy, and not chaste? What happens to them?…

Clean, Prepared, Ready – part 2  (Nancy Missler) The “holy ones without blemish” are those believers who have chosen to daily be sanctified in order to keep themselves clean, prepared and ready for the Lord’s return. They have continued to “put off” their sin and self, and “put on” Christ. They are not “perfect” by any means, but have simply “put on” the One who is perfect and that’s Christ… All ten virgins in this parable represent born-again, Bible-believing, Christian believers… But because the five foolish virgins did not maintain their faithfulness and their watchfulness to the very end, the oil in their lamps ran out and they ended up with their lights going out. In their personal lives, they had quenched God’s Spirit in their hearts, which not only stopped their intimate fellowship with Him, but also caused His Light in their lives to go out. Thus, they became “foolish” and walked in darkness. The definition of the word foolish is “double-minded.” A double-minded believer lives two lives: God’s Life and “self-life”… rather than overcoming the world, the flesh and the devil, this believer is overtaken… They had no intimacy and no personal relationship with the Lord… That extra portion of oil is something only the individual himself can secure. It comes from an outside place called “Gethsemane”––it’s a place of crushing, a place of surrender, and a place of emptying so one can be filled with Christ’s oil and His Spirit… outside and beyond ourselves…. found in Christ alone.

Clean, Prepared, Ready – part 3  (Nancy Missler) …it doesn’t matter how badly we’ve blown it in the past; it doesn’t matter what horrible things we’ve done; and it doesn’t matter how many times we’ve failed. That’s what 1 John 1:9 is all about: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This is the basis of how we are able to overcome and the means by which we can become faithful. Overcomers are not perfect by any means. They simply are the ones who recognize their choices and know what to do… continually washing ourselves, putting off our sin and self, being re-filled with the Holy Spirit, and producing works of righteousness. It’s not enough to just put on “surface cosmetics,” perfumes, and oils; we must also allow the Lord to complete the inward beautification process that will ultimately produce the “fruit” that He is looking for… The five foolish virgins were shut out of the wedding because they weren’t prepared. They weren’t sanctified… They weren’t overcomers. For them the race was over. They could have earned a place of sovereignty in the coming kingdom, but because of their foolishness, they will end up only being Christ’s subjects…. Most of us don’t want to hear that we are expected to buffet our bodies, run the race, and that through much tribulation we will obtain the kingdom reign. We would much rather hear that we will all inherit the kingdom, that we will all receive rewards, that we will all rule and reign with Christ, and that we will all attend both the wedding and the marriage supper of the Lamb. We want to hear that there are no consequences to a careless Christian life. Unfortunately, that’s just not Scriptural… Many of us have only sprinkled blood on the door-posts of our houses—we’ve only been born again (Exodus 12:7), but we have not totally surrendered our lives to Christ… It will affect every choice we make, determine every decision we come to, and influence every action we take. Our eternal destiny will depend upon these things… we are preparing our wedding garments now that we will be wearing there!

The Kingdom, Power and Glory  (Nancy Missler) Having been declared righteous and justified at our new birth so that we might escape the wrath of God does not exempt us from being chastised on judgment day. God will pronounce some very harsh judgments on the unfaithful Christian who has allowed the cares of the world, the temptations of the flesh, and the wiles of the devil to overtake him and lead him into carnality. Just as an unfruitful branch is cut off from the tree, so these Christians will suffer the loss of rewards… God is not only a loving God, He is also a just God… Only those who live faithful and obedient lives here will enjoy a special fellowship with the Lord there. These are the overcomers who have not only washed their robes in the Blood of Christ, but who have also walked according to His Spirit, and persevered through the trials; more in this series.

Worship – the Key to Joy  (Nancy Missler) …worship is the doorway to intimacy with the Father.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins  (Chuck Smith) …the oil is representative in the Scriptures of the Holy Spirit… And so it is significant that there were those foolish virgins who had their lamps, but no oil. And as the result when the cry finally came, behold the bridegroom cometh, notice they were all lumped in one party until that final cry, and then the real nature was exposed… Therefore, be ready. Not only that, walk in the Spirit, be led by the Spirit, depend upon the Spirit of God, be filled with the Spirit; all of these are injunctions given to us throughout the New Testament. And watch, therefore, because you don’t know when the Lord is coming.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins  (Matthew Henry) Sincere Christians are the wise virgins, and hypocrites the foolish ones… They had just the oil enough to make their lamps burn for the present, to make a show… sin is folly, but especially the sin of hypocrisy, for those are the greatest fools, that are wise in their own conceit, and those the worst of sinners, that feign themselves just men… all their care is to recommend themselves to their neighbours, whom they now converse with, not to approve themselves to Christ, whom they must hereafter appear before…

The Parable of the Ten Virgins  (John Loeffler; khouse) Any pilot knows that flight planning requires having enough fuel to safely make the entire trip with a generous reserve for emergencies or unexpected situations. Nothing is more sobering than a fuel warning light that pops on when you’re in the middle of nowhere. The gospel parable of the foolish virgins is identical. All the virgins had oil in their lamps to start with. It’s just that some didn’t have enough to go the whole night until the bridegroom came… Standing firm in a time of trial requires aggressive action and preparation ahead of time just in case this isn’t the immediate end time and a time of testing is coming.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins  (David Brown; blueletterbible) …the folly of “the foolish” consisted not in having no oil at all; for they must have had oil enough in their lamps to keep them burning up to this moment: their folly consisted in not making provision against its exhaustion… the real difference between the two classes who profess to love the Lord’s appearing is a radical one… a very little more, and they also are ready. But the Bridegroom comes; the ready are admitted; “the door is shut,” and they are undone. How graphic and appalling this picture of one almost saved–but lost!

The Parable of the Ten Virgins  (David Guzik; blueletterbible) The five foolish virgins appeared to be ready for the bridegroom, because they had their lamps in hand. But they really were not ready, because they took no oil with them… The point of this parable is simple – be ready. The price for failing to be ready is too high.

The Spirit of Truth  (Paper Gifts for Estefany) ALL the scaffolding for what the Bible calls ‘The Great Tribulation’ has been quietly slipping into place. When the Lord Jesus spoke to His diciples about the end days, His first words were a warning. ‘Do NOT be deceived.’ ‘Take heed that ye be not deceived.’ How can we KNOW if we are being deceived? Is it possible that we could be deceived without even knowing it? How can we KNOW if we really have truth? In order to stand firm, with our relationship to the Lord Jesus intact, and our ‘wedding garments’ undefiled while we wait for His return, we need…

PRAYER

Lord, sometimes my heart feels far away from You. There is so much around us that distracts us from You. Please soften my heart and keep it safe in Your hands. And please soften the hearts of our precious children. Help us to come home to You with all of our dirt, all of our pain. We ask for Your forgiveness for anything that defiles our garments, and Your help to turn away from anything that separates us from You. Give me a love for Your Word; and wash me clean as I ponder over it. Help me to keep walking that difficult path of sanctification and holiness, and to stay close to You, to be a truthseeker, and to keep myself clean, prepared, and ready for your return, and bring much glory and honour to Your name while we’re waiting. Amen.
