Tutorial ~ Make your own Bookmarks

This is a tutorial to show you how easy it is to make your own bookmarks. These fun and colourful Bible bookmarks in the tutorial below were whipped up for our teenagers. They are only about 2cm wide and look really cool. For want of a better name I have called them ‘bookmark skinnies’ or ‘bookmark thins’. I’ve kept them really simple for this tutorial, but it’s easy to choose your own dimensions or jazz them up once you’ve got the hang of it. So let’s get started…

OKAY, NOW FOR THE HOW-TO

These bookmarks are super easy to make.

1. Getting started
Open up a blank document in a program like MS Publisher, Photoshop, or Open Office Draw. These instructions are for MS Publisher. Set your page size (in this case) to 4×6. That’s about the size of a normal photo. Choose portrait or landscape.

2. Add a Frame
Now that you have your page size set, how many bookmarks do you want per page? Insert 4 rectangle shapes for 4 bookmark skinnies. These colourful frames were about 2.1 cm wide. If you prefer 2 bookmarks per page, insert 2 rectangle shapes and these ones were about 4.5 cm wide. Leave a small gap between them. Choose your colour and border.

3. Add a Bible verse
Insert a text box inside each frame. Like so. Type in a favourite Bible verse. Choose your colour and font. Adjust the size and position of your text box until it looks just right.

4. Print.

SOME EXTRA JAZZ FOR YOUR BOOKMARKS

ADD YOUR CHILD’S NAME Personalise it. Add your child’s name – simply insert another text box. And maybe use a different font.
ADD AN IMAGE Give them a buzz to see a bookmark with their photo on it. Or add your own photo or a family photo. Our kids like looking at us as much as we like looking at them. Is there a special occasion coming up – Birthday? Christmas? Graduation? Doing a theme? Find some matching clip art or a photo that your child will love. For something different, try a strip of photos or images.
EXPERIMENT with different sizes or shaped bookmarks. Set your page to A4 and try some GIANT bookmarks (2 or more per page) and fill them with Bible verses for something fun!

Four of them sit side by side on ONE piece of 4×6 photo paper. That makes it easy to print off extras to share around with family and friends. Let your kids hand them out. It is important to teach our kids that they have something to GIVE, too.
