PUFFIN ~ FUN FACTS

• Puffins are sea birds. They known as the ‘sea parrot’ due to their large, colourful beaks.
• They can fly AND swim using their waterproof wings as propellers, and their webbed feet like paddles to dive up to 200 feet (61 m) deep.
• Puffins can beat their wings up to 400 beats per minute, and fly up to 50 mph (80km/h).
• Puffins stand 12 inches (30 cm) tall.
• Puffins lay only one egg each year in a burrow.
• A puffin chick is called a ‘puffling’.

Puffin – fun facts for kids  (answersingenesis) Hi! My name is Piers and I am an Atlantic Puffin. Puffins like me are really popular birds because of our clown-like coloring. Some people even call us “sea parrots” because we have a colorful beak and bright orange legs and feet. But did you know our beaks fade to grey during the winter? In the spring the fun coloring comes back.

Atlantic Puffin – fun facts for kids  (answersingenesis) All 3 species of puffins stand upright and have black and white head and body plumage. They also have brightly-coloured triangular shaped bills, mostly yellow and orange. Their legs and feet are orange. While underwater it uses its small wings as propellers and its webbed feet like paddles. The Atlantic puffin can fly up to 50 mph (80 km/h), beating its wings up to 400 beats per minute.

Atlantic Puffin – information for kids  (answersingenesis) The puffin, also known as the sea parrot, is a sea bird. They make their home in the cold arctic waters and rarely come to shore except to lay eggs. The puffin has a very colourful large beak during the breeding season with red, yellow, and blue stripes… After the breeding season, the colours are shed, leaving the bill smaller and gray in color. They have backward-pointing spikes inside the beak to help hold food. Puffins usually pair for life, congregating in large colonies during breeding. A single egg is laid at the end of a 6 foot (1.8 m) long tunnel. After 6 weeks, the chick will leave the burrow at night to avoid predators and find its way to the sea. Although it cannot fly yet, it is a good swimmer and will dive if danger appears.
