PENGUIN ~ FUN FACTS AND SPECIAL DESIGN FEATURES
- Penguins are classified as flightless birds.
- Emperor penguins can grow as tall as 4 feet (1.2 m) tall.
- Emperor penguins can live for 20 years.
- Emperor penguins survive the coldest weather in the world with a waterproof coat of feathers over a woolly jumper of downy fur. Their coat is so dense they can have 200 feathers in every square inch.
- Emperor penguin chicks are adorable balls of grey fluff… but then, you already knew that. :)
- Emperor penguins are world championship deep divers and can hold their breath up to 18 minutes or more.
- Penguins’ unique body shape combined with a layer of blubber is a fantastic design that not only keeps out the cold, but turns them into fast-moving underwater torpedoes. They were born to fly, not in the air, but in the water.

An orange-yellow band extends from behind the eyes of the emperor penguin downward to the neck and chest area. There is also orange coloring on its lower beak. Emperor Penguin – fun facts for kids (answersingenesis) Enduring sub-zero temperatures and hurricane force winds, they survive in these extreme conditions because of their thick plumage… The emperor penguin feeds on squid and fish… catching them in its long razor-edged bill… penguins gather inland on solid ice… each female lays one large egg, which is carried on the feet and covered with a fold of skin. It is passed between the female and male until the female heads off to feed in the open water a few days later. The male incubates the egg for 40 to 50 days… Penguins huddle together to keep warm. Life as an Emperor Penguin (answersingenesis) Back at the rookery, her mate waits along with the rest of the males. A couple months ago in June, she left him there to guard the single egg she laid and rolled atop his feet, a difficult and dangerous transfer. On top of the father’s feet and underneath a fold of skin, the egg is incubated at 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees C), even through subzero temperatures outside. Scientists discover Secret to Fast Swimming Penguins (icr.org) When the penguins are out of the water, they preen their feathers and fluff them up all over their streamlined bodies, adding about an inch of air between the skin and outermost layer of feathers.
