Shimmer the Coral (answersingenesis) Hey kids, I’m Shimmer, the staghorn coral. What’s a coral, you ask? A coral is a type of Cnidarian. A Cnidarian is a group of animals that have special stinging tentacles called nematocysts that we use to capture prey as it floats by us in the water. As corals, we live in colonies of individual polyps. People call us “stony” corals because we make our polyps out of calcium carbonate, which is very hard—and your bones have it too! Coral – fun facts for kids (answersingenesis) Scientists have discovered that coral has layers, and some scientists have measured these layers claiming that they show slow growth over long periods of time. However, it has been shown that coral can grow quickly. With this knowledge, even the “oldest” reefs would only be a few thousand years old. This is consistent with a young earth, created only about 6,000 years ago… Coral polyps are connected to one another in large colonies, sharing nutrients and even other organisms in a mutualistic relationship. Fish

Clownfish (answersingenesis) There are about 300 species of clownfish or damselfish. They live in the western and central Pacific Ocean among the coral reefs, and are especially common in the Australian Great Barrier Reef. Orange Clownfish (answersingenesis) This species is easily identified by its bright orange body and three white, vertical bars. Each fin is outlined with black. The relationship that the clownfish has with a sea anemone is truly a wonderful design feature. This relationship shows God’s creative hand in His creation. Very early in life, the clownfish must find a host with which to live. The sea anemone with its stinging tentacles is the perfect place. Butterflyfish (answersingenesis) Butterflyfish are named for their brightly-colored and patterned bodies, which can be shades of red, blue, white, black, orange, and yellow. Crustaceans

Clever Crustaceans (creation.com) University of New Hampshire zoologist Win Watson attached an underwater video camera to a standard commercial lobster trap and lowered it to the seabed. It had been thought that the traps were pretty effective, with lobsters entering through a funnel-shaped opening, and, after dining on the bait placed inside, it was thought they would have great difficulty finding their way back out through the narrow end of the funnel… But when he and other researchers looked at the first time-lapse images from their trap-mounted video camera, they were totally stunned…!

Seal | Sea Lion | Walrus

Spectacular Surprising Seals (creation.com) Seals, sea lions and walruses are grouped together under the name ‘pinnipeds’ (from Latin: ‘wing-footed’ or ‘fin-footed’). Pinnipeds are divided into three families: the Phocidae, Otariidae and Odobenidae. The Phocidae are known in scientific circles as ‘true seals’. They are fantastic swimmers, using their hind flippers to propel themselves through the water while their small front flippers act as rudders or stabilizers. The Otariidae are known as ‘eared seals’ because, as the name suggests, they have small, external ears. They also have long front flippers, measuring up to one-third of their body length, which propel them when swimming, while their hind flippers serve mainly as a rudder for steering. These animals are commonly referred to as sea lions. All members of the Odobenidae family are walruses, and they combine features of both other families. Walrus | Walrus (answersingenesis) The walrus is known for its large size and pink–reddish brown coloring. It is also easily recognized by its large tusks. The walrus also has a thick layer of blubber under its skin that protects it from the freezing water. The walrus uses its whiskers to find its invertebrate food, sometimes diving down 300 ft (91 m) to retrieve its very favorite food, clams, from the ocean floor. Sea Otter (answersingenesis) The sea otter has webbed hind feet which are perfect for swimming; its forefeet are smaller with semi-retractable claws. Other Sea Animals

Giant Clam (answersingenesis) Some giant clams look iridescent because of their blue and purple spots, while others look gold or green. Starfish (answersingenesis) There are over 2,000 species of starfish… The colors of the starfish range from yellow, orange, pink, and red, with a few that are gray, blue, green, or purple; information from scientists who take the Bible seriously.

Sea Lilies and Starfish—splendours of the sea (creation.com) Starfish are unusual in that they are able to regenerate body parts. If a limb is severed, it grows back. Spanish Dancer (answersingenesis) This creature from the nudibranch family gets its name from the appearance of its swimming motion that resembles the flaring skirt of a Spanish dancer. The male Spanish dancer enters dance competitions to win its mate. Nudibranch (answersingenesis) The words “slug” and “festive display of color” don’t usually come to mind at the same time. Queen Conch (answersingenesis) The queen conch, one of the largest marine snails, is best known for its bright pink, orange, or yellow coloring on the inside of the flared lip of its shell.
