Dinosaurs and The Bible ~ FREE Article for kids

There is so much wonderful information available about dinosaurs from a Biblical perspective, I could have written a whole series of articles for my sponsored children. Instead, a common apologetics question is ‘How do dinosaurs fit into the Bible?’ so that is where I concentrated my attention for this one. I like to answer apologetics questions with my kids before they become problems, because, as with everything in God’s Word, there is always a rational explanation. We just have to find it.

DINOSAURS—THE SHORT (AND BIBLICAL) HISTORY FROM THE BIBLE—THE HISTORY BOOK OF THE UNIVERSE

Have you ever wondered how dinosaurs fit into the Bible? God made dinosaurs as part of His ‘very good’ creation. God made many, many animals—big and small—all after their own KIND. Genesis 1:20 tells us that God created sea creatures and flying creatures on day 5 of creation week. That includes water dinosaurs (called plesiosaurs) and flying dinosaurs (called pterosaurs). Dinosaurs were created on day 6 with man and the other animals that live on land. Mankind lived with dinosaurs until they became extinct. We know from Genesis 1:30 that dinosaurs (and all animals) originally ate plants. After the Fall, when the deadly ‘sin’ virus entered creation, death, decay and disease was the result. Sadly, this included man and creatures turning on each other.

God sent two of every KIND to Noah to put on his ark, including dinosaurs. Teenage animals were likely chosen. They were smaller; ate less; made less mess; and would have been in top breeding condition for many years to come after the flood. Scientists who believe the Bible estimate there would have been about 55 KINDS of dinosaurs on the Ark (or 110 dinosaurs), each one averaging roughly the size of a cow. The Ark was the size of an ocean liner (that’s a huge ship), so that would have been no problem to fit all the animals in.

All the dinosaurs, animals not on the Ark (and humans who refused God’s invitation) would have perished during the global Flood. What evidence would we expect to see in the world today for a global flood? Maybe a lot of water still laying around? That’s right! The earth today is covered by 70% water! Did you know that? Plus, there are billions of dead things, laid down by water, all over the earth. Even in the deserts and on the top of Mount Everest. They are called fossils—bones turned into rock. Fossils do NOT need many years to form, just the right conditions and water. Water is one of the secret ingredients.

Dinosaurs came off the Ark with Noah and his family, ready to repopulate the Earth with the other birds and animals. Dinosaurs lived for centuries after the Flood. How do we know that? There are many stories, legends, drawings, descriptions, etchings, carvings and sculptures of them found all over the world. They look just like the dinosaurs we find in our museums today. Many people called them ‘dragons’. A farmer killed one in 1572 AD. The King James Bible uses the word dragon more than 30 times. It was published only 400 years ago, in 1611 AD. As dinosaurs continued to die out, memories of them started to fade.

Fossils of dinosaurs were rediscovered during the 1800s and given a new name—dinosaur. It means ’terrible reptile’. Special scientists, called palaeontologists, dig up bones and put them back together like a jigsaw puzzle. As dinosaurs are considered extinct, we can only guess what they looked like by examining the clues they left behind. When dinosaur fossils are discovered, they are found jumbled up with all kinds of birds, plants and other animals that lived with them. This is exactly what we would expect from a disaster like a global flood. And they look JUST like the birds, plants and animals we find alive today. Despite what God says in His Word, sadly, many people refuse to believe in God or His Word. They deny that He is our Creator and have come up with other reasons why the dinosaurs disappeared. This includes constipation, sunburn, air pollution, a gas explosion, dust and comets. Even though fossils are made by water, a flood is not on the list!

Did you know that there are many legends and stories that some dinosaurs may possibly still be alive today?! Wouldn’t it be fun if scientists find a real dinosaur hidden deep in a jungle somewhere? Keep a sharp look out near where you live. Grab your Bible and read God’s description of two real live dinosaurs, starting from Job 40:15 and Job 41, so you know what to look for! :) God created so many wonderful things for us to enjoy. Things that are beautiful…. intricate… mysterious… perfect. To teach us about Him. To show us how wonderful, magnificent, wise and powerful He is. So that we will worship Him. Jesus! God the Creator!
