GOD IS BIGGER THAN OUR PROBLEMS
Let’s encourage our children while they are young to walk day by day with the Lord and to trust Him. No matter how big our problems and challenges are, they are nothing compared to our God. He created the whole universe. With a flick of His finger, whatever our problems are will be dealt with in His time and in His way, and after it has done its work on our character, as we look to Him to sort them out. King David started out when he was young to walk with the Lord and to trust Him. His life as a young shepherd boy, bravely protecting his sheep from bears and lions prepared him for when he would one day meet Goliath, and then later to become one of the most famous kings of Israel, known to be ‘a man after God’s own heart’. King David became so famous that even today when someone says that they are fighting a ‘David-Goliath battle’, everyone knows what they mean, even if they have never read the original story. The Bible tells us that Goliath was six cubits and a span. What is a cubit and how big is it? It’s the distance between your fingertips to your elbow, so everyone will be a bit different. The standard cubit measurement from history was anywhere from 17.5 to 20.6 inches (44.5 to 52.3 cm). That makes Goliath somewhere around a minimum of 9 feet tall. Here is a giant leg bone and a giant size chart of real-life giant skeletons that have been found in history to get some perspective on the size of Goliath. DAVID ~ INFORMATION FOR KIDS
Goliath (Chuck Missler) …we explored the importance of understanding Genesis 6. The straightforward presentation of the text seems to clearly portray a strange union of fallen angels with women to produce a hybrid race called the “Nephilim” or fallen ones… Genesis 6:4 also includes the haunting phrase, “…and also after that….” Apparently these strange events were not confined just to the period before the Flood. We find that there seems to be some recurrence of those things which resulted in unusual “giants” appearing in subsequent periods later in the Old Testament narrative, specifically the giant-races of Canaan. There were a number of tribes… that were giants. The kingdom of Og, the King of Bashan, was the “land of the giants.” Later, we also find Arba, Anak, and his seven sons (the “Anakim”) also as giants, along with the famed Goliath and his four brothers.
David, man after God’s own heart (Chuck Missler) …an overcomer is simply one who recognizes his moment- by-moment choices, confesses his sin and then, chooses to turn around and go God’s way. He is not someone who is perfect, religious or good. David in the Old Testament, if you recall, was an overcomer. In the New Testament, he was even called a “man after God’s own heart.” He certainly wasn’t perfect or good or religious! He simply knew how to confess his own sin and turn around from following it. This is the kind of overcomer we are talking about and that God desires. Why is becoming an overcomer so important?

How big was Goliath? (genesis6giants) the Bible describes him as ‘6 cubits and a span‘; a cubit is roughly 18-20 inches, so that makes Goliath a minimum of 9 feet tall! Look at these diagrams of some known real-life giants to get an idea of how big Goliath was. Where do giants come from and why? (This was the reason that God sent the great worldwide flood of Noah and later, why God instructed Joshua to wipe out 8 whole tribes.) Other giants mentioned in Scripture.

David & Samuel – group game (applesaucekids) a version of ‘duck duck goose’ about David being chosen. ‘Samuel’ taps each person and says ‘brother’ until he chooses and says ‘David’. David then chases Samuel to see if Samuel can get back to David’s spot first. If Samuel makes it first, then David becomes Samuel and the game continues. Ideally, you would be able to play long enough that each child has a turn as Samuel and as David at least once. It also allows for each child to become the messenger proclaiming God’s choice and each becomes chosen.

Here’s an idea inspired and adapted from hunting for treasure (kidsprayer). Write a Bible verse on one side of a piece of paper and a matching prayer on the other. Do a few different ones. Pop the papers inside an envelope with some stickers. e.g. Psalm 56:3 for your Bible verse and a prayer on the back that David may have prayed before confronting Goliath, something like: Lord help me to always put my trust in You and not to be afraid.
