Many years ago, I read a little book by Florence Littauer called Silver Boxes – The Gift of Encouragement. Know it? Over the years, many wonderful books have come and gone, their words blurred and lost in a dim memory of time, but her powerful word picture that originally came from the genius of a child has stayed with me…

Let my words be like silver boxes with bows on top—gifts of encouragement.
“…Lord, help my words be silver boxes.
Neatly wrapped up with a bow;
That I give to all so freely,
As through each day I gladly go.
Silver boxes fill of treasure,
Precious gifts from God above;
That all the people I encounter
Might have a box of God’s own love.”

LET MY WORDS BE LIKE A PRETTY GIFT BOX ~ BIBLE BOOKMARKS TO COLOUR ~ FREE PRINTABLE
As this article recalls, “The title of the book comes from an experience she [Florence] had while teaching a Bible class for young children. She was explaining the meaning of Ephesians 4:29: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers…”
One little girl stood up and loudly proclaimed for all to hear that, “our words should be like little silver boxes with bows on top!”
Isn’t that beautiful? Treasure out of the mouth of babes. :)
At the time of reading the book, I used her idea for a youth group devotional one night, carefully wrapping a little box in shining silver paper with a bow on top and taking it along with us. I wonder if any of those kids still remember it? Of course, when I was thinking about this just recently, I couldn’t remember the exact words she had used even though the powerful word picture was still intact, so these 8 x 1.5 inch FREE Bible journalling bookmarks, all ready for you to download and colour, say:
Let my words be like a pretty gift box with a sparkly bow of encouragement on top.
All around us, people are starving for our words of blessing, affirmation and encouragement. Yes, our words. Let’s take the time to stop and encourage others. It only takes minutes, but you will be giving them a priceless gift. Something they will treasure forever and inspire them to be the best person that God made them to be. And let’s encourage our children to encourage others around them, too. Go and give someone a pretty gift box with a sparkly bow of encouragement on top. And do it today.
