BABY KOALA AND THE HOUSE THAT CLEANS ITSELF

This is a baby koala. Aren’t they the CUTEST things??!! Just look at this adorable little face. Who could resist it? He looks like he has just woken up. And like all babies, he probably has! Just in time for lunch. These special animals live in Australia. They have sleepy eyes; fluffy ears; a broad, flat nose; and cuddly grey and white fur coats to keep them warm. God has designed koalas to live in very tall Eucalyptus (or gum) trees and made them with some special features so they could do so. They have long, curved arms and legs; very strong hands; a fierce grip; and sharp claws. This helps them scramble up tall tree trunks and jump between the branches, digging their claws into the bark like hooks. That sounds like fun, doesn’t it?!

During the day, koalas are usually curled up in the fork of a Eucalyptus tree, having a snooze in the shade. Just after sunset, they start moving around the trees, eating the spicy smelling leaves. These leaves are often toxic to other animals, but God has given koalas a special digestive system so that they can eat the leaves He created for them. They have about twelve favourite varieties of Eucalyptus trees and it’s the oil in the leaves makes them sleepy. Males have a large scent gland on their chest that they rub on their favourite trees. In the breeding season, they fiercely fight each other, with loud, angry growls echoing through the night. Koalas are a mammal, which means they feed their babies milk. They are also marsupials, which means they have a special pouch that God designed for them to be able to carry their babies safely around in. Mrs Koala’s pouch is unusual. It opens backwards! As Mrs Koala is climbing tall trees, her pouch hangs upside down! Oh no! Will her precious baby fall out? No! God – the Master Designer – also created her with very strong muscles, so her baby is safe and will not fall out. And even more amazing… Mrs Koala is unable to reach her pouch to clean it, to prepare for her baby like other marsupials do. So God has designed the pouch to CLEAN ITSELF… until the little nursery sparkles and glistens, ready for when Baby Koala climbs into it! Isn’t that incredible… a SELF CLEANING NURSERY! Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have a house that cleans itself?! I sure would like one of those… wouldn’t you?!

A baby koala is called a Joey. At birth, Baby Koala is born blind, has no fur and is only about 2cm (less than an inch) long. They weigh less than 5½ grams. That’s only about one tiny spoonful of dried rice grains. As soon as Baby Koala is born, they have to make the long, precarious journey to get to the pouch. This is done by a slow wriggling crawl, guided by instinct that God has given them. God also made sure that Baby Koala’s arms were already quite strong, helping it to cling to Mom’s fur along the way. Once Baby Koala is safely in the pouch, they hide in there for six months, drinking milk and growing big. Then over the next six months, Baby Koala becomes strong enough to begin exploring outside Mom’s pouch. They hitch a ride by clinging to the fur on Mom’s back and learn how to eat the toxic leaves that God designed for them. And of course, getting lots of hugs from Mom, especially when they need a rest or are cold. One day, we watched a koala high up in a gum tree. As we looked, her eyes and nose appeared to be moving strangely. We took a closer look… then laughed! It was Baby Koala… digging in tiny little feet and clambering up and over Mum’s nose and past her eyes… getting up on top for a better look! It was so cute!

When koalas have a baby, will it be a cow, or a sheep, or a monkey? No! Even before peeking into Mrs Koala’s pouch, we already know we will find a baby koala hidden in there. That’s because God created every living thing to reproduce after its own KIND. Like everything else that God made, koalas were carefully planned and perfectly designed by the Master Designer in the very first week of history, when the world was made. Have a look in your Bible – in Genesis chapter 1 – and see if you can work out what day that was when God made koalas and all the other animals that live on land (*Day 6). God created so many wonderful things for us to care for and enjoy. Things that are beautiful…. intricate… mysterious… perfect. To teach us about Him. To show us how wonderful, magnificent, wise and powerful He is. So that we will worship Him. Jesus. God the Creator.
