Big Horse, Little Horse… Zorse! Huh?! ~ FREE Article for Kids

Horse / Zebra / Donkey Article for kids; free printable

In this FREE article that I designed for our kids, they get to peek into the Guinness World Records’ photo shoot between Radar, then the world’s tallest living horse, and Thumbelina, the world’s smallest living horse. They will also meet Eclyse, a beautiful zorse – huh?! She’s a beautiful zebra-horse hybrid. Her story goes like this… Her Mom, Eclipse, is a horse. She went on a holiday and shared a nice little paddock with some other horses… oh, AND… a zebra called Ulysses. Eclyse was the stunning little surprise that was born later.  :o

ARTICLE TEXT

BIG HORSE, LITTLE HORSE… ZORSE!

This photo was taken in 2006 for the Guinness World Records, when Radar—then the world’s tallest living horse—met Thumbelina—then the world’s smallest living horse. Radar stood 202cm (6 feet 7.5 inches) from hoof to shoulder. Thumbelina’s only about the size of a small dog!

….huh???!!! What on earth is that??!!!!

It’s a zorse! Meet Eclyse! She is a zebra-horse. Her story goes like this… Her Mum, Eclipse, is a horse. She went on a holiday and shared a nice little paddock with some other horses… AND a zebra called Ulysses! Eclyse was the stunning little surprise that was born later! She looks as though she’s been painted by a clever artist, but her markings are real. She’s just beautiful, isn’t she?

Did you know: Horses, zebras, and donkeys can all interbreed, because they all descended from the same original ‘horse KIND’—as beautifully demonstrated by Eclyse. If any of them were to have a baby, we know it would not be a giraffe or a cow. It would still be of the horse KIND. There is also a great variation of sizes built into God’s original design—just ask Radar and Thumbelina. Did you know that the oldest horse fossil that has been found looked exactly like… a horse! This means that Noah only needed 2 equines (or horse-KINDS) to put on the ark – one male and one female. All the horses, donkeys, zebras alive today would have descended from them. Hmmm… I wonder what those original ancestors looked like? At least one of them must have had stripes, because although zebra offspring can lose stripes in just a few generations; horse offspring cannot gain stripes. Once the genetic information is lost, it is lost forever—unless a striped equine is re-introduced back into the population, as what happened with Eclyse.

God created everything in the very first week of history, when the world was made. Have a look in your Bible – in Genesis chapter 1 – and see if you can work out what day He created horses and all the other animals that live on land. God created so many wonderful things for us to care for and enjoy. Things that are beautiful…. intricate… mysterious… perfect. To teach us about Him. To show us how wonderful, magnificent, wise and powerful He is. So that we will worship Him! Jesus! God the Creator!

UPDATE 2021:  Thumbelina held this Guinness World record (scroll down) of ‘the world’s shortest living horse‘ until her death in 2018. She even had her own website with millions of adoring fans. To date, she still holds the record for the ‘shortest horse ever’. Radar has since been ousted by a gentle giant called Jake who now holds that record. Check him out and you may like to include a photo of him for your sponsored child. At 6 feet 11 inches, he is enormous. I wonder if Thumbelina’s successor will get to meet Jake for a photo shoot sometime soon.  :)
