The story behind the ‘cranky butterfly’ design…
Butterflies, of course, don’t get cranky. Or, at least, they don’t generally display crankiness. Not unless it’s two males competing for territory. But their caterpillars do. Especially when they are feeling threatened. And did you know that butterflies each have their own distinctive personalities, just like other animals?! Within the butterfly ‘kind’, of course. Many people are surprised to hear that. But what else could we expect from our magnificent Creator who designed everything with such incredible skill, care, and beauty? When I spot a gorgeous butterfly caterpillar in my garden, it is a delight to occasionally run a teasing finger gently down their black, velvety backs. Some respond quite placidly. Others, however, do not.
One day in particular, a little guy poked his ‘tongue’ (it’s called an osmeterium) out at me quite vigorously, in a real, ‘BLAHHHHHHHH!-I’m-big-and-mean-and-scary-so-don’t-mess-with-me’ kind of attitude. Then as if for emphasis, he added, ‘I-MEAN-IT!’ How can something so adorable be so cranky? I couldn’t help smiling tenderly at this feisty little critter, saying, “You know, life’s too short to be a CRANKY little butterfly!” And after a few minutes of silent reflection while he settled down and went back to eating – with me still smiling and then gently picking him up to sneak another pat – I realised that there’s a life lesson in there for us. Our lives are fleeting, just like theirs are. It’s easy – and sadly, trendy – to be ‘a cranky little butterfly’ to other people around us, especially if they are annoying or threatening us, or if we are feeling stressed and life is not going how we planned it. It’s much more difficult for us to be disciplined, and instead, display the character of Christ. So that whatever we do, we will do it… in kindness. And love.
Lord, help us in whatever You have given to us to do, especially when we are feeling stressed, to do it always with Your kindness and Your love.
