Who was Cain's wife?

Who was Cain’s wife? If that question has ever bothered you, today we’re going to take a look at that, because, like all questions about God and the Bible, there is an extremely logical answer. It’s just a matter of discovering it. And along with that, we also have some FREE Cain and Abel colouring pages, puzzles, crafts and creative ideas for our kids.

THINK SPOT

Where did Cain get his wife?  You may like to discuss this with your child, as for some reason the ‘where did Cain find his wife’ question seems to stump many people and it’s one that atheists like to bring up, so it’s best to hit this head-on with our kids before it becomes a problem to their faith. I could give you the short answer – just one Bible verse, but where’s the fun in that?! :) Ready to dig a little deeper with me? Okay, let’s have a look at it…

  • Scripture tells us that the Lord Jesus, the ‘second Adam’, took on the nature of man in order to save mankind. God became human – permanently. This means that ONLY descendants of Adam can be saved.
  • Genesis 2:18-20 tells us that after the Lord God brought all the animals to Adam to see what he would name them, ‘but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him’. The Bible makes it clear that there were NO other humans around. Adam was alone. ‘And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.’ And so God made the perfect bride for him. Because God made Eve from one of Adam’s ribs, she also was a descendant of Adam.
  • Genesis 3:20 tells us that Eve was the mother of ALL living.
  • Genesis 5:4 tells us that Adam and Eve had other sons and daughters besides Cain, Abel and Seth. We just don’t know their names. ‘And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters.’ For Scripture to use the plural term sons and daughters after the birth of Seth, there must have been at least two more of each. God told them to go and have lots of kids. Adam and Eve were created genetically perfect and lived a very long time, so they could have had a bunch. Scripture does not tell us exactly how many children Adam and Eve had, however, a fascinating footnote (8) in The Works of Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews – Book 1, Chapter 1), written centuries later and first published around 94 AD, not long after the time of Christ, records the oral history and Jewish traditions handed down from their ancestors. While we can accept only what is written in Scripture as being ‘set in stone’ and that must always be where we begin, other sources may be interesting so long as we hold them with an open hand, knowing they are NOT inspired and come from man – and may or may not be true. So… (drum roll)… the footnote states, “The number of Adam’s children, as says the old tradition was thirty-three sons, and twenty-three daughters.” Wow, if that’s true, that is a bunch!  :o
  • So Cain married his sister! Easy! Many early patriarchs married their sisters or close relatives. I simply told my kids: Up until the time of Moses it was okay to marry your sister. After that time and because of The Fall, the genetic DNA code had degenerated to the point where God said ‘no more’. And interestingly, I was recently looking up some information about the Egyptian Pharaoh boy-king, Tutankhamen, that confirmed this. Speculation continues as to how he died, but scholars suspect the weakened (smaller) gene pool from intermarriage among the Pharaoh families may have played a significant role, leaving him in a weakened and vulnerable state. And he was born before the time of Moses when God gave the commandments. God does not always tell us why, but He always has a good reason and wants us to trust Him.

WHY DID CAIN MURDER HIS BROTHER?

The story of Cain and Abel is the story of two brothers. In fact, the very first two brothers in human history. They were the first two sons of Adam and Eve. One did it God’s way. The other one paved the way for, ‘I did it, my wa-ay’. God had already taught them that ONLY by the shedding of innocent blood would there be remission of sins, looking forward to the time when God Himself would step into history and become human, to pay the ultimate price of death for our sin and rebellion against a Holy God. The judge pronouncing judgement then stepping down from the bench to pay the penalty of death, the innocent paying for the guilty. Abel obeyed God and offered the sacrifice that God required. Cain thought that the works of his own hands were ‘good enough’ and offered that. They were NOT good enough. DIY religion is never good enough. His offering was rejected, just as any of our DIY religion efforts will be rejected. Instead of being repentant, Cain was angry with God. And angry with his brother for doing it right. Desire is a powerful emotion that must always be under God’s control. Desire got the better of Eve back in the Garden of Eden; now it is about to get the better of her son, Cain. God could see straight through to his heart and warned Cain there was a problem and how to deal with it. Scripture tells us what happened…

  • Genesis 4  And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why are you angry? and why is your countenance fallen? If you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. And unto you shall be his desire, and you shall rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? And He said, What have you done? the voice of your brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you till the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto you her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shall you be in the earth. And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, You have driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from Your face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that everyone that finds me shall slay me. [Now, who would be the ‘everyone’ looking for Cain that he refers to?…Abel’s brothers!] And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. [Why? Scripture tells us that vengeance belongs to the Lord. And only to the Lord. He is the only one able to give that perfect balance of justice and mercy.] And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife [there she is, perhaps the most famous wife of all history] and she conceived…
  • Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts…
  • 1 John 3:11-12 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

CAIN AND ABEL ~ INFORMATION FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE

Cain and the First Murder – Free article for kids  (creation.com; scroll down) The Bible says that ‘without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins’ (Hebrews 9:22). This is because the punishment for sin is death. In the Old Testament, when a person killed and sacrificed an animal, they showed that they understood this… Perhaps God had told the family what He wanted them to do, that is, to offer a blood sacrifice when they came to Him. Abel’s heart was right toward God. Cain disregarded all this… he didn’t want to do things God’s way. It seems he decided for himself how he would behave and what was right and what was wrong. His heart was not right toward God. When God rejected his offering, Cain was very angry. God said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry and so sullen, Cain? If you do what’s right, will you not be accepted? But if you don’t do what’s right, sin is like a wild animal crouching at your door. It wants to have you, but you must overcome it’; free printable

Cain’s Wife–who was she? – Free article for kids  (creation.com; scroll down) Adam and Eve were the very first two people. They had ‘other sons and daughters’ besides Cain and Abel (Genesis 5:3–5), and one of these they named Seth. We are not told the names of the others, but as Adam lived for 930 years, there were lots and lots of them… At the beginning of human history, Adam’s sons—Cain, Seth and their brothers—must have married their own sisters. This is because Adam and Eve were the parents of everyone. After that, their children’s sons could have married their sisters or their girl cousins, and had children of their own. Very soon, there would have been hundreds of people living on the earth. And then thousands. And soon hundreds of thousands… Can brothers marry their sisters today?… by the time of Moses, 2,500 years later, genetic mistakes had built up to the point where it became necessary for God to forbid brothers from marrying their own sisters (Leviticus 18:1–18). That’s why it was okay at the beginning, but is not okay today; free printable

Cain’s Wife—Who Was She?  (Answers in Genesis) Skeptics of the Bible have used Cain’s wife time and again to try to discredit the book of Genesis as a true historical record… The truth is—most Christians probably couldn’t answer these questions. And yet there are answers… Cain was in the first generation of children ever born. He, as well as his brothers and sisters, would have received virtually no imperfect genes from Adam or Eve, since the effects of sin and the Curse would have been minimal to start with. In that situation, brother and sister could have married… By the time of Moses (about 2,500 years later), degenerative mistakes would have accumulated to such an extent in the human race that it would have been necessary for God to bring in the laws forbidding brother-sister (and close relative) marriage (Leviticus 18–20)… Genesis is the record of the God who was there as history happened. It is the Word of One who knows everything and who is a reliable Witness from the past. Thus, when we use Genesis as a basis for understanding history, we can make sense of evidence which would otherwise be a real mystery; free printable

Where did Cain get his wife?  (Christian Answers) We don’t even know her name, but is she the most talked about wife in history? Many skeptics have claimed that, for Cain to find a wife, there must have been other “races” of people on the Earth who were not descendants of Adam and Eve. To many people, this question is a stumbling block to accepting the creation account in Genesis and its record of only one man and woman at the beginning of history—a record on which many Old and New Testament doctrines depend. Defenders of the Gospel must be able to show that all human beings are descendants of one man and one woman (Adam and Eve)—as only those people who are descendants of Adam and Eve can be saved. Thus, believers need to be able to account for Cain’s wife and show clearly that she was a descendant of Adam and Eve (Genesis 4:1-5:5.) Before we answer this question, we will first show how important it is to the meaning of the Gospel.

Where did Cain find his wife + declining life spans of Adam’s descendants  (icr.org) Information you may like to discuss with your child from scientists who take the Bible seriously; and check out the fascinating graph on those extremely long life spans and find out what caused them to decrease. ‘The first generations of people had very few mutations. Even long after the Flood, marriage between close relatives was common. Abram married his half-sister Sarah, for example. God did not declare marriage between close relatives off-limits until He gave the Law to Moses… Today, scientists measure a mutational build up over time. When we wind that mutation clock back to the beginning, we find what the Bible said all along: At one time there was a perfect man and a perfect woman who raised genetically pure children. Adam and Eve’s sons and daughters could have married their close relatives with no problems at all.’
