ETERNITY = FOREVER… WHERE WILL YOU SPEND IT?

Just because the mouse lives in the cookie jar, doesn’t make him a cookie, Papa ten Boom from ‘The Hiding Place’ movie tells us. In the same way, just because we may believe in God, go to church, read the Bible, or even pray, that doesn’t make us forgiven. One of the most important things we can do is to make sure our child knows the Gospel and the way to get to Heaven. It is NOT our default destination. God respects our CHOICE. And we have to do it His way, not ours. It’s all about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We each have to choose Him… one-on-one with God. I want to make sure my children know this. Here are some FREE Heaven colouring pages, puzzles, crafts, activities and more that hopefully will help explain it to them.

THE BAD NEWS: WE ARE ALL BORN WITH A GENETIC DEFECT THAT SEPARATES US FROM GOD – WE ARE ALL S.I.N. POSITIVE

There is a problem. A big one. God created the world perfect. He put Adam and Eve, the first humans, into a beautiful garden, told them to go and have fun and gave them just one rule. Ever tried to give your kids just one rule? You guessed it. They broke it. Now we are all born with a genetic defect that separates us from God. It’s called sin or rebellion. Missing the mark, as the Bible puts it, of God’s perfection. It’s an archery term. We may think that we are a pretty good person, but who are we comparing ourselves to? The person next to us… or God’s standards? He will be comparing us to His 10 commandments. Ever stole a pencil or told a lie just once? You’ve blown it! We have ALL broken God’s laws and gone our own way. And when the Lord Jesus (God in a human body) was on earth, He raised the standard of perfection even higher. Just in case we ever thought we might be perfect(!), Jesus said that even ***thinking*** about breaking one of God’s laws was sin. We ALL stand guilty and condemned before Him. And the penalty is death. Right now, there is a massive gulf between us and God. We’re here. He’s there. And it would take nothing but God Himself to find a solution to rescue His kids. Lots of people think they have found a way to bridge that gap… or that they can make up their own rules… or that all roads will eventually lead to God. (And they will, after death, but that will be too late!) Let’s have a look at what the Bible, the Word of God, says. How do you measure up to this list?

WHAT WILL *NOT* GET YOU INTO HEAVEN

  • Trying to be a ‘good’ person – our good can never be good enough.
  • Obeying the Ten Commandments (the passmark is 100% – 99.9% won’t cut it).
  • Doing nice things for people.
  • Thinking nice thoughts.
  • Going to church.
  • Giving money to the poor, the church, or God’s work.
  • Believing in God (James 2:19 tells us the demons also believe… and tremble!)
  • Praying to God.
  • Reading the Bible.

These are all great things, but God is NOT impressed with our D.I.Y. efforts to win His favour. So how can I be sure that I will go to Heaven?

THE STORY OF MR BAD GUY AND MR NICE GUY

There were a couple of guys who wanted to swim from New Zealand to the USA. Mr Bad Guy and Mr Nice Guy. They both think they have a pretty good shot. The starting gun goes off. Mr Nice Guy makes a great start and is well out in front. His community service record of helping people is standing him in good stead. He is making some great strokes and getting some good distance between him and the shore. Mr Bad Guy has done a lot of bad guy stuff. He flounders and drowns in the shallows. But no matter how hard they try, or how far they get from shore, or how well they might do in relation to each other… the simple fact is, neither of them will ever be able to swim to America. In the same way, no matter how hard we try, or how good we think we might be, we can never be ‘good enough’ to get to Heaven. There was only ever one person who was good enough, who lived a perfect life and scored 100%. He came to Earth to pay your penalty of death. And that was Jesus Christ. God, the Creator, Himself.

THE GOOD NEWS:  BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND YOU SHALL BE SAVED

God loves you. In fact, He’s crazy about you. You were created to know God in a personal way—to have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. But first, you must realise that you are a sinner. There is a huge gulf between God and us. No matter how hard we try, we can never be ‘good enough’. There is no way we can cross it, but God’s love bridges the gap. Jesus Christ (who is God in human form) paid the penalty for all of our sins by His death on the cross, so that through His blood that was shed for you and me, God can forgive us our sins and give us eternal life. All we have to do is ASK. That is who will be in Heaven. Forgiven people. He died an agonising death to rescue His kids. It’s the judge stepping down from the bench to pay the penalty of death for the condemned and guilty prisoner. It cost Him everything. We can’t buy it. We can never earn it. It’s a free gift!

BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND YOU SHALL BE SAVED

Where to start…God invites us cross over the huge gulf separating us by the ONLY bridge He has provided. This is the Good News, that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son (i.e. Himself in human form) to die in our place. Jesus Christ (the innocent) died on the cross for us (the guilty), and paid the penalty of death for our sin and rebellion against a Holy God. It was a swap. He did die and was buried, but because He was God and perfect, He didn’t stay dead. He rose again! He was seen by some 500+ eyewitnesses, many of whom lost their lives because they refused to deny it. Incidentally, the Lord Jesus became HUMAN and came to Earth and died to save humans. NOT fallen angels. NOT fallen angels masquerading as ‘aliens’ from ‘somewhere out there’. NOT for any other supposed life from ‘somewhere out there’. Humans. He forever changed the form of who He was and permanently became human in order to rescue us. He loves us that much. Will you choose to respond to that great love and commit your life to Jesus Christ the Messiah right now, making Him the Lord and Master of your life? Repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be washed away by His blood. Repent = u-turn = to change your direction in life. Instead of running from God, run to Him. He is the perfect Father and He is crazy about you. Receive His love. He promises to live in your life and heart. When we give our lives to Jesus Christ, we have eternal life!

Let’s talk to God about it.

Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe that You died and shed Your blood to pay the penalty of death for my sins and then rose again from the dead. I put my faith and trust in You. Please forgive all of my sins. I have broken Your commandments. (Probably all ten of them!) I now turn from my sins and receive your free gift of eternal life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Please come and live in my heart and be Lord of my life. Help me to live from here on in a way that pleases You. Thank you for loving me and forgiving me. I worship You. Amen.

If you have just received Jesus Christ as Lord, then you now have a new love and a new life… eternal life! Your name is now recorded in the Lamb’s book of life. You are now His beloved child. You can talk to Him about anything. Ask Him to make Himself real to you. And you can be completely honest with Him. He knows you even better than you know yourself. Get to know Him through His Word, the Bible. Study it. Read it slowly. Ponder over it. Think of it as a love letter just for you, teaching you about Him, how He deals with humanity, and also teaching you about the true history of the world. His Word is the best way to hear what God wants to say to you. This is just the beginning of a wonderful new intimacy with Jesus Christ.

BIBLE VERSES

Colossians 3:12  God loved you and chose you for His own.

Romans 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Jeremiah 17:9  The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Romans 3:10-12  There is none righteous, no, not one. There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

2 Peter 3:9  The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

1 John 1:8-9  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 5:8  But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 14:6  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”

Romans 10:9  That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

Ephesians 2:8-9  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.

John 5:24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that hears My word, and believes on Him that sent Me, has everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life.

Galatians 3:24-26  Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

1 John 5:11-12  And this is the record, that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that has the Son has life; and he that does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Revelation 3:19-21  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me. To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with Me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.

HEAVEN ~ INFORMATION FOR KIDS ~ Share some of these ideas with your child

You are a Precious Pearl – devotional  (Godisreal) Priceless to God. But the beautiful pearl is covered with sin. God wants to clear off the dirt that surrounds us and bring out the beauty of who we are, as a part of His beloved creation. This cleansing starts when we completely give our lives to Jesus Christ, who suffered for all our sins and imperfections when He died on the cross. He wants to free the beauty captured by your sins, and make it visible to the world that surrounds you. He wants to show you to other people as a sparkling pearl. Filled with Him. Share this beautiful insight with your child. They need to know that they are God’s precious treasure.

Whose Kingdom will you choose?  (answersingenesis) Although your story begins in the Kingdom of Darkness, the King has shown you great love. He gave His life for His disobedient children. If you turn away from the Dark Kingdom and swear allegiance to Him, He promises to give you a new life in the Kingdom of Light.

How can I become a child of God?  (answersingenesis) using the 7C’s of history starting with Creation – God tells us in His word, the Bible, that He created the heavens and the earth. He made the plants and animals. He also made the first people, Adam and Eve. God made them in His image (like Him in many ways) to have a special relationship with Him. They were also commanded to lovingly rule over the rest of the creatures on the earth. Everything God created was “very good”.

The word ‘sin’ is an archery term, it means to ‘miss the mark’  (Chuck Smith; scroll down) The law came along in order that we might see how far we did miss the mark. The word sin means missing the mark. But if you don’t see the mark, how can you miss it? How can you know how far you have missed it? You may be shooting wildly, but I can’t convince you of that until I put up the mark. Then as your arrows go flying all over everywhere, I say, “Oh man, you really missed the mark.” The law came along that we might see how far we missed the divine ideal. How far we came from living a life that was acceptable and pleasing to God. The law once and forever put down the thought of self-righteousness if properly understood.

God built the bridge  (Chuck Smith; scroll down) For though man could never build a bridge to God, God in His mercy built the bridge to man. And there is the vast difference between every religious system and Christianity. For in every religious system, you have man’s endeavor to build this bridge to God. Man trying to climb the ladder to reach God. Man trying to reach out and touch God, find God, discover God. But in Christianity, you have God reaching down to man… The infinite God reaching down to touch the finite man. “God so loved the world that He gave” (John 3:16). He built the bridge by sending His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but know and experience the eternal life of God.

ABCs of Salvation  (jdfarag) Today is the day of Salvation! If I die today will I go to Heaven? Why would anyone put off the most important decision they could ever make in their lives, concerning eternal life?

ABCs of Salvation  (fluidicice) There’s a merciful, omnipotent, generous and loving God watching out for you. He created every cell in your body and is longing to know you. He descended from heaven to be crucified on a wooden cross 2,000 years ago so that we may live forever in eternity with Him!

ABCs of Salvation for kids with Bible verses  (keysforkids) Admit – Believe – Choose; Admit honestly to God that you have sinned and disobeyed Him. Believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose again. His blood was shed to pay for your sins. Choose to trust Jesus alone for the forgiveness of your sins.

God’s Promise of Eternal Life  “Oh the wonder of it! The outrageous beauty! God didn’t have to give us cherry blossoms, you know… the promise of eternal life is out here, all around us! A week ago, these trees were just dead sticks—now they’re bursting with life! It’s a message from God, just like Walter said… Jesus said that whoever believes in Him will never die!… Springtime is God’s promise that someday we’ll all share His resurrection life!”

The key to reaching the lost  (khouse) What key did Jesus, Paul, Timothy, James and Stephen all use extremely effectively to reach the lost? Have you ever thought, “There must be a key to reaching the lost”? There is – but it’s rusty through lack of use. The Bible does actually call it “the key,” and its purpose is to bring us to Christ – to unlock the Door of the Savior (John 10:9). Yet much of the Church still doesn’t even know that it exists. Not only is it Biblical, but it can be shown through history that the Church used it to unlock the doors of genuine revival… I simply ask, “Would you consider yourself to be a good person?” When he says, “Yes I would,” I take him through the Ten Commandments to show him God’s standard of righteousness, beginning with “Have you ever told a lie?” When he says that he has, I ask him if he has ever stolen anything. Then I say how Jesus said, “Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery already with her in his heart.” When he admits that he has also stolen and lusted, I gently say, “By your own admission, you are a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart and we’ve only looked at three of the Ten Commandments.” I shut him up under the Law, and talk about the reality of Hell and Judgment Day. Then I bring the mercy of the Cross, repentance and faith, having the confidence that it is the gospel that is “the power of God unto salvation”…

Hell is for real  (original link removed) Hell is not a party and the devil does not rule over it. According to Jesus, Hell was created for the devil and his angels. The last thing God wants is for any person created in His image to end up in Hell… it’s because He loves us that He spoke about and warned of it often. The same Jesus who tells us of Heaven with all its glories also tells of Hell with all its horrors.

Not good – just forgiven  (original link removed) God doesn’t want our grubby efforts of goodness! His pass mark is 100%. None of us are ‘good’ enough! There is only ONE person who ever got 100%. And that is God Himself. The Lord Jesus Christ.

Consummation – 7Cs of history  (answersingenesis) “The Seven C’s of History” (Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross, Consummation) help us remember the big events which have affected… the history of the universe… God, in His great mercy, has promised not to leave His creation in its sinful state. He has promised to do away with the corruption Adam brought into the world. He offers us this salvation through His Son. Also, He has promised to remove, in the future, the Curse He placed on His creation (Revelation 22:3). He will make a new heavens and a new earth one day—one which we can’t even begin to imagine (2 Peter 3:13). In this new place there will be no death, no crying, no pain (Revelation 21:4). Nobody will be sad. As those who have repented and believed in what Jesus did for us on the Cross, we can look forward to this new heaven and earth, knowing we will enjoy God forever in a wonderful place.

How to get to Heaven  (freechristianillustrations) What is your plan to reach heaven? Many think: Well, I’m a relatively good person and so when I die I’ll just hope for the best. Others may add: I’ve been baptised, gone to communion, plus I give regularly to the church and charities – I think I’ve ticked all the boxes… Fact is, if we could earn our way to heaven by good deeds or religious rituals, Christ died needlessly on the Cross. If we could save ourselves by our works, there would be no point for Jesus to die for our salvation.

The most important thing  (themostimportantnews) Do our lives have meaning? Why were we put here? What is going to happen to us when we die? What follows is the most valuable thing that I could possibly share with you. If I had not given my life to the Lord Jesus Christ, I would probably be dead today. He has taken the broken pieces of my life and has made them into a beautiful thing, and He can do the same thing for you.

Strength for Difficult Times  (Godisreal) Jesus Christ came to set us free from the reign of sin and make us children of God. When you choose to follow Jesus Christ – may it be imperfect, with failing and struggling all the way – then nothing can rob you from God’s hands. If you would see how great God’s love is for you, you would never doubt Him again.

QUOTE

“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” C.S. Lewis

“I do not believe that any man can preach the gospel who does not preach the Law. The Law is the needle, and you cannot draw the silken thread of the gospel through a man’s heart unless you first send the needle of the Law to make way for it.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

Heaven is a Free Gift  (kidssundayschool) a lesson to show it is impossible for someone to get to Heaven on their own efforts; all people are sinners and this sin causes separation from God; God sent His only Son to pay the price for our sins and it is by placing our trust in Jesus alone that we can be saved.

Sin Spoils  (kidssundayschool) visual Sunday school activity making a sandwich using a piece of bread that is mouldy, to demonstrate how even a little bit of mould can ruin a good sandwich, comparing this to how even a little bit of sin, without Jesus can keep us from going to Heaven.

A Heart for Jesus  (kidssundayschool) a lesson using hard and soft candy to show soft hearts and hard hearts and how a person can have a relationship with Jesus – and the sin that covers the heart; and how each time someone sins another layer is added; then we refuse to admit we are sinners and try to cover our sin which is like the wrapper covering the candy. It is the same with Jesus. He loves us so much he even died on a cross so we could be saved. This means we are very special to Jesus.
