Prayer / Worship ~ Links

Some students once asked me how to pray. Smiling, I replied, “It’s simple. Just talk to God like you would your best friend… BUT with a whole lot more respect, because there could be a lightning bolt with your name on it! :) It’s okay, though, because He loves you and knows everything about you. You can tell Him anything. In fact, He already knows about it. He knows you better than you know yourself.”

Sadly, we are not always going to be able to be there for our kids, but God always will be. I figure the best thing I can do for my kids is to encourage and help them to connect to each other. One of the most valuable ways we can do this is to inspire, remind and teach our children to pray and worship, that God IS there and listening. As God’s kids, they have direct access to the throne room of the universe. Here are some fun and creative ideas to get you started.

Matthew 6:9-13  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Psalm 139  O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know my downsitting and my uprising, You understand my thought afar off. You compass my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, You know it altogether. You have beset me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain to it. Where shall I go from Your spirit? or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, You are there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, You art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yes, the darkness hide not from You; but the night shines as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to You. For You have possessed my reins: You have covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Your works; and that my soul knows right well. My substance was not hid from You, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in Your book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with You… Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Prayer is all about relationship with God   Prayer is not all about us or a to-do list. Jesus wants to know us—the person deep down inside – and to talk to Him like we might talk to a best friend (but with a whole lot of respect, because He could send us that lightning bolt!)  How does God want to be loved?

Teaching kids to pray   Talk to God about anything; there is nothing too big or too small; pray anywhere, any time; God listens and knows all anyway

Teaching kids about praise and worship   Let’s encourage our kids to worship from their hearts

Teaching kids about worship   Thinking about how great God is and putting Him first. This may be something they can do with their family or friends

Prayer pocket   Adapt this creative idea for paper. Write a Bible verse on the outside, e.g. Psalm 121:4-8. Your child writes a prayer and puts it in the pocket while they sleep. We may be sleeping, but God never sleeps and always watches over us.

Prayer / Bible treasure hunt   Write a Bible verse on one side of a piece of paper and a matching prayer on the other. Put inside heart shaped envelopes with heart stickers, eg: Psalm 56:3 – Lord help me to always put my trust in You and not to be afraid. Luke 16:10 – Lord, help me to be honest and want to please You in all things. Or a verse/prayer for wisdom for their teachers; or asking God to help them to treat others with respect. Be creative. And don’t forget to share your ideas with us so we can all learn from each other.

Adoration alphabet   Creative idea to teach our children to worship – for each letter of the alphabet, write down words about God, e.g. T= trustworthy, truthful, terrific, triumphant; X = x-cellent, x-tra special, x-treme, x-alted, x-tra large, x-ray vision (a bit of poetic licence might be needed for the X)

Write a letter to God   Leave everything in His hands – the best hands to deal with it (send some nice paper to your child, perhaps with some suggestions to get them started)

Thanksgiving notes  lots to choose from; free printable

Thanksgiving post it notes   jot down things to thank God for, e.g. the sun for energy; a good sleep; kind words

I spy God   How do you pray to someone that you cannot see? How can you believe in something you can’t touch? Does God even exist? The answer is all around you. Free printable guide to help your kids discover God in a whole new way

Prayer wailing wall   Draw a wall complete with a few cracks. Write out prayer requests (send paper slips) to attach to it. Include a bit of history – how people have gone there for centuries to pray

Hopscotch and pray   Creative ideas to pray while they play. We can’t do chalk, but we can send some paper to hopscotch and write our prayers on

Pray while you play   More creative ideas to teach your child to pray while they play

M&Ms are for missions   Adapt this fun idea for paper using stickers. Turn something simple into a powerful prayer tool or ‘power pellets’.  Children who learn to pray get the focus off themselves, are more willing to serve and show concern for others

Giving compliments to God   Compliment others so that it becomes easier to praise and worship to God   More fun and creative ideas to encourage our children of all ages to develop a relationship with God through prayer, praise and worship (and our own children/ grandchildren/ students too)
