TEACHING OUR KIDS TO PRAY AND WORSHIP

Some students once asked me how to pray. Smiling, I replied, “It’s simple. Just talk to God like you would your best friend… BUT with a whole lot more respect, because there could be a lightning bolt with your name on it! :) It’s okay, though, because He loves you and knows everything about you. You can tell Him anything. In fact, He already knows about it. He knows you better than you know yourself.”

Sadly, we are not always going to be able to be there for our children, but God always will be. I figure the best thing I can do for my children is to encourage and help them to connect to each other. One of the most valuable ways we can do this is to inspire, remind and teach our children to pray and worship, to assure them that God IS there AND listening. As God’s children, through their relationship with the Lord Jesus, they have direct access to the throne room of the universe. Here are some fun and creative ideas to get you started.

THINK SPOT

When we pray the Lord’s prayer and get to the bit, ‘lead us not into temptation’, that used to always puzzle me. It took me many years before I realised that God will allow testing in our lives in order to purify and refine the gold that is in us, burning away the dross, and making us more valuable, our ‘gold’ more pure. The evil one wants to make us fail, in order to destroy us and turn that testing into a temptation so that we will give God ‘the forks’ and walk away. So when we pray, ‘lead us not into temptation’, we are actually asking the Lord to help us pass the test. God’s desire is for the Christian not to fail in temptation, while satan’s desire is for the Christian to fail and eventually give up and turn away from God (i.e. become an apostate). There are four main schemes that the evil one uses to succeed in the destruction of Christians (from a note that I had made, too long ago to remember the source. If it’s yours, please let me know so I can give you credit):

He tries to crush us under the weight of hardship or pain.
He tries to urge us toward a wrong fulfillment of natural desires.
He tries to make us complacent, careless, and self-assertive.
He tries to misrepresent God to us and create false ideas of God’s truth and His will. Matthew 4:5 demonstrates that satan can quote (and misapply) Scripture.

PRAYER & WORSHIP ~ BIBLE VERSES

Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. What makes Worship so important? (Nancy Missler) …my own story of several years ago, where I had become so discouraged and so disheartened at some of the horrific events in my life that I had lost the joy of my salvation. I tried to remedy it by praying more, going to more Bible studies and giving more things over to the Lord. But still, I remained shut down and joyless. The event that finally changed my life was seeing the word “worship” at every turn… Psalm 16:11 links joy and worship together: …”only in [His] presence [through worship], is there fullness of joy.”

Worship is the Key to Joy (Nancy Missler) …worship is the doorway to intimacy with the Father…

The Fullness of His Joy (Nancy Missler) What Paul is saying here is that he is so full of joy from being in the Lord’s presence that it doesn’t matter what his circumstances are. This is an astounding statement in light of the horrific trials and problems that Paul faced. If he can find joy in the midst of his circumstances, we certainly can do the same! “Worship” is the key to this kind of joy, simply because worship is the key to the Lord’s presence…

Blessings from Intimacy – part 1 | part 2 (Nancy Missler) When we finally realize that every circumstance that happens to us is “Father-filtered,” we can be comforted by the fact that since God is in everything, nothing can really hurt us. This validates the importance of knowing what God’s will is in our night seasons and that often He does allow hard things into our lives to draw us towards intimacy with Him. So, contentment is not determined by our circumstances, by the actions of others or by how we feel. Contentment only comes from knowing that God loves us and that no matter what our circumstances are or how we feel, He will be faithful to His promises and bring us through.

Real worship of God begins with surrender (David Guzik/blueletterBible; scroll down) It would be easy for Saul to point his finger at the Amalekites or the Philistines and say, “Look at those Godless idolaters. They don’t worship the true God like I do.” But Saul didn’t worship the true God either because the real worship of God begins with surrender.

Prayer is all about Relationship with God (kidsprayer) Prayer is not all about us or a to-do list. Jesus wants to know us—the person deep down inside—and to talk to Him like we might talk to a best friend (but with a whole lot of respect, because He could send us that lightning bolt!) How does God want to be loved?

5 Ways God speaks to us every day (bitesizeBiblestudy) God speaks in creation; God speaks through His Word; He speaks to us through His Holy Spirit; God speaks through other Believers; He speaks through circumstances. But whenever God speaks, He never, never, never disagrees with Scripture, nor does He lead us down selfish, deceptive, or godless paths. Is it God’s voice you’re hearing today?

When the answer is ‘no’ (karinasussanto) God has his own reason why he doesn’t answer our prayer. When the answer is, “No,” please don’t be disappointed and discouraged, don’t think that God doesn’t love and care to us; don’t hate and leave Him. When God doesn’t answer our prayer, I encourage all of us to remember that God has a plan to give more beautiful than we ask and He will give according to His will and plan as He said, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Teaching children about Worship (kidsprayer) Thinking about how great God is and putting Him first. This ‘worship and praise wall’ may be something your child can also do with family and friends

Prayer in a pocket (kidsprayer) This creative idea could easily be adapted for paper. Write a Bible verse on the outside, e.g. Psalm 121:4-8. Your child writes a prayer and puts it in the pocket while they sleep. We may be sleeping, but God never sleeps and always watches over us.

Prayer / Bible Treasure Hunt (kidsprayer) Write a Bible verse on one side of a piece of paper and a matching prayer on the other. Candy is for missions (kidsprayer) Adapt this fun idea for paper and stickers. Turn something simple into a powerful prayer tool. Children who learn to pray get the focus off themselves, are more willing to serve and show concern for others

Prayer ‘wailing wall’ activity (kidsprayer) Draw a Jerusalem wailing wall, complete with a few cracks. Write out prayer requests on paper slips to attach to it. Include a bit of history – how people have gone there for centuries to pray.
