Tower of Babel ~ Links

Ever wondered where all the different languages and races came from? And what about cavemen? How do they fit into the Bible?

The Tower of Babel comes from a time in history when all humanity was united in race and language – and everyone still knew we are all one human family. The incredible engineering skills of all mankind were together in one place (just like we have today, through the internet)… and the sky was the limit. In this post you will find FREE Tower of Babel colouring pages, puzzles, crafts and creative ideas for kids. As we can really only speculate what this original tower looked like that celebrated the ‘achievements of man’, I’ve chosen a 21st century equivalent for my picture today.

THINK SPOT
It is God who gives us our skin colour and language. It is up to us to choose our character.

*

A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND

ALL people alive today are descended from Noah and his three sons. We might be different colours on the outside due to different amounts of melanin or ‘paint’ in our skin, but we are all pink on the inside. Ignoring the Creator’s commands for ‘the family’ to spread out over the earth after the global flood of Noah, instead, they decided on a little DIY project of their own and set out to build the great Tower of Babel to celebrate the achievements and technology of man. They decided to reach God on their own terms and by the power of man, rather than on God’s terms and by the grace of the Creator. Sound familiar? But God intervened and split them up before they could finish. Suddenly, no one could understand what the others next to them were saying. Can you imagine?!  :o

Everyone moved away, each family taking only their respective talents and technology with them, and spread out into different places over the earth. Think about that for a minute. If you were suddenly forced to move away with just your immediate family group, what talents would you take with you? Maybe you might know how to fix a car or a computer, but would you know how to build one from scratch? And where would you live? Incidentally, this is most likely where ‘cavemen‘ came from. Intelligent people who had to leave their homes and live in caves for a while. There are places in the world today where people still live in caves, for example, Coober Pedy in central Australia where they mine opal, due to the extreme heat.

TOWER OF BABEL ~ BIBLE VERSES

Genesis 11  Read the original story of where all the different languages and races came from, direct from the Creator.

Acts 17:24-28  God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth… and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation, that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after Him, and find Him, though He be not far from every one of us: For in Him we live, and move, and have our being…

Job 30:5-6  They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief) to dwell in the clifts of the valleys, caves of the earth, and the rocks.

Hebrews 11:36-38  And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

A Tower for Rebels – article for kids  (answersingenesis) God’s judgement at the Tower of Babel and the consequences of this rebellion against God. Babel had a huge effect on the world, which continues today; The confusion at Babel led to all the different languages we speak today; People in different parts of the world look different because God’s judgement at Babel separated us, but we’re still one big family, descended from Adam; beautifully illustrated with cartoons from scientists who take the Bible seriously

Tower of Babel – article for kids  (creation.com; scroll down to ‘The Tower of Babel’) After the Flood, the eight members of Noah’s family were the only people alive on the earth. God gave them a very special blessing. He told them to be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. So Noah’s three sons and their three wives had lots of children, who had lots of children, who had lots of children… Soon there were hundreds, and after a while thousands of people. God told Noah that his descendants were to spread out all over the earth… What a great adventure this would have been! But sadly, they didn’t do it…; beautifully illustrated, from scientists who take the Bible seriously plus interesting FAQ snippets: Why can people talk and animals can’t? Can all the languages on Earth be traced back to one language? How did all the different people groups form? How could the people of that day have built such a huge tower?; free printable

Tower of Babel – DIY false religion  (Chuck Smith; scroll down) And that’s exactly what false religious systems will do for you. They will steal from you. They will rob you and ultimately they’ll destroy you. But Jesus said, I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10). What a contrast to the religious systems and to Christianity… The basic difference lies in that religions are all man’s endeavors to reach God. And so if I were to draw a cartoon to represent religion, I would draw a circle, the earth, and because of my artistic ability, I’d put a little stick man on the circle with hands lifted up trying to reach God. Man’s starting at its earth base. I’d put him on his tiptoes trying to reach heaven, trying to reach infinity, trying to reach God. The religious systems are man trying to build a bridge to God. But no matter how tall he may stretch, you cannot bridge from the finite to the infinite. It’s an impossibility. If I were to draw a picture of Christianity, I would have the round circle, the earth, and hands coming out of heaven towards that little man on earth. For Christianity is God’s endeavor to reach man.

Tower of Babel  (answersingenesis) The Tower of Babel (2242 BC) was a post-Flood rebellion against God by Noah’s descendants. God judged them by dividing the single language into multiple language families. As these groups spread out and became isolated, certain features (e.g. skin shade, eye shape) became dominant in certain groups; Was there a real Tower of Babel?; What happened at the Tower of Babel?; Languages; Diversity of Languages started at Babel; and more

What did the Tower look like?  (answersingenesis) The simple answer is that the Bible does not tell us. All we know is that God intervened before the construction project was completed. Studying the oldest buildings from the area, archaeologists assume the Tower at Babel looked like a ziggurat.

Towers of Today  (answersingenesis) Humans have never really stopped building “towers” like the one at Babel. You see, the people back then disobeyed God and refused to spread out like He commanded them. They built the tower because they rejected His Word and wanted to do their own thing.

101 Scientific Facts written in the Bible  (eternal-productions; scroll down to number 37, 38, 39) …penned centuries before they were discovered. Scientific foreknowledge found only in the Bible offers one more piece to the collective proof that the Bible is truly the inspired Word of the Creator… God has created all mankind from one blood; origin of the major language groups explained; origin of the different “races” explained… Genesis alone offers a reasonable answer to the origin of the races and languages.

Tower of Babel  (armstronginstitute) Did King Nebuchadnezzar finish the tower of Babel? Ancient artifacts provide clues… Nebuchadnezzar literally calls this monument the Tower of Babylon. (“Babylon” is interchangeable with Babel.) He describes this tower as an important ancient Babylonian edifice built by a “former king” that, for some reason or other, the workers stopped short in finishing—they “did not finish its head.” Why not? Some clue could be taken from the second name Nebuchadnezzar gives for this tower: the Tower of Borsippa. Borsippa literally means tongue tower, thus providing a link to language. Surely a significant linguistic event must have happened… Not only does Nebuchadnezzar describe, on these cylinders, a rebuilding of this tower, another of his inscriptions depicts what it may have looked like.

Tower of Babel  (skywatchtv) For more than two decades after the fall of Jerusalem, Nebuchadnezzar reigned over the colossal Babylonian Empire. His architects raised the capital city of Babylon to the height of its grandeur… Nebuchadnezzar immortalized his efforts on a stele—a stone slab… he specifically claims reconstruction of the Tower of Babylon… Cyrus, King of Persia, conquered the city without a battle in 539 BC… Babylon then became part of the Persian Empire… the Greek historian Herodotus visited Babylon immortalizing the tower. In 440 BC, Herodotus wrote: In the middle of the precinct there was a tower of solid masonry, a furlong [201 meters] in length and breadth, upon which was raised a second tower, and on that a third, and so on up to eight. The ascent to the top is on the outside, by a path which winds round all the towers. When one is about half-way up, one finds a resting-place and seats, where persons can sit for some time on their way to the summit. On the topmost tower there is a spacious temple…’

Tower of Babel – archaeological stele  (schoyencollection) this ancient archaeological stele (stone) has the clearest known images of the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II, showing his plans to rebuild the Great Ziggurat of Babylon, considered to be the original Tower of Babel; it includes ‘a carving of the Tower of Babel from a front view, clearly showing the relative proportions of the 7 stages including the temple on the top; to the right: the standing figure of Nebuchadnezzar II with his royal conical hat, holding a staff in his left hand and a scroll with the rebuilding plans of the Tower (or a foundation nail) in his outstretched right hand; at the top: a line drawing of the ground plan of the temple on the top, showing both the outer walls and the inner arrangement of rooms…’

The Tower of Babel was real  (faithwire) …experts were looking closely at a tablet that was unearthed over a century ago in Babylon. The incredible stone was etched with messaging that dated back to the 6th century B.C… “I thought as a kid this was folklore, a legend… it actually existed.”

  • Confusion – 7C’s of History

Confusion – 7C’s of history – article for kids  (creation.com) beautifully illustrated; After the Flood, Noah and his family were the only people alive on the earth. God told them to have lots of children because he wanted their descendants to spread out and live all over the earth. So Noah’s family had lots of children, who had lots of children, who had lots of children, and so on. After a while there were hundreds, and then thousands of people. They moved from the mountains of Ararat, where the Ark had landed, to a broad plain called Shinar. But none of them wanted to obey God’s command to live in other parts of the earth. Instead, they said to each other: “Come on! Let’s build a city for ourselves with a tower that reaches way up into the sky, to make a name for ourselves…”

Towel of Babel – 7C’s of history – simple explanation for kids  (answersingenesis)  Why are there so many different people? Why do we look so different? The Flood destroyed the whole world—everyone except Noah and his family. But Noah’s family started sinning against God again. So God judged them, too. This time He confused their language and scattered them all over the world. All the different people we see today are from Noah’s family! That includes you and me.

Confusion – 7Cs of history for kids  (answersingenesis) God in His Word tells us the true history of “cavemen”. After God confused the languages at Babel because of man’s disobedience, various groups split up, taking with them their individual knowledge of technology. Some knew more about farming, some knew more about building great structures, and some knew how to use metal to make tools. Those groups which didn’t know how to do any of these things would be forced to “begin again”.

Confusion – 7Cs of history  (creation.com) The Seven Cs’ of History (Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross, Consummation) help us remember the big events which have affected the history of the universe… After Noah and his family came off the Ark, God commanded them to spread out and fill the earth (now very different from before the Flood). But the descendants of Noah disobeyed God. They decided to stay in one place, building a tall tower they hoped would help keep them all together. When the Lord saw their disobedience, He was displeased — as He is with all disobedience — and confused the language of the people so they couldn’t understand each other (until this time, they all spoke one language). In this way, the Creator scattered them over all the earth.

Confusion – cartoon for kids  (answersingenesis; scroll down) “The Seven C’s of History” (Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross, Consummation) help us remember the big events which have affected—and will affect—the history of the universe. • One Blood | One Big Family

One Big Family – article for kids  (creation.com; click on ‘One Big Family’) In the Bible, God tells us that everybody is related; illustrated article for children from scientists who take the Bible seriously; free printable

Would the real Caveman please stand up  (answersingenesis) Strange-looking fossils of “early man” keep turning up in the caves and other archaeological digs in Africa, Europe, and Asia. They look a lot like us, and yet they are somehow different… Everything you might expect to find from the settlements of any non-industrialized people is found… suggest these early travelers sewed garments or wove baskets… colorful cave paintings that may relate to phases of the moon. Site after site reveals thousands of small, beautifully made javelins, arrows, and ornate artefacts, often with carvings and designs on them, such as the ivory pendant made from mammoth tusk… Our relatives may have looked different, but they weren’t bumbling brutes. They had the very human and God-given ability to discover creative solutions in a dangerous, sin-cursed world. And they were all rebels from God, in need of His grace.

Why do we look different?  (answersingenesis) If you were to look through a microscope at a piece of your skin, you would find lots of interesting cells… (called “melanocytes”) make a pigment (called “melanin”) that helps to give your skin some color. The more melanin that these melanocytes produce, the darker the skin will be.

What difference does Babel make?  (answersingenesis) Babel had a huge effect on the world, which continues today; The confusion at Babel led to all the different languages we speak today; People in different parts of the world look different because God’s judgement at Babel separated us, but we’re still one big family, descended from Adam.

Out of Babel… not Africa  (icr.org) The Bible teaches that shortly after the Flood, mankind disobeyed God’s commandment to replenish and fill the earth. Instead, they stayed in one place and attempted to re-establish the same pre-Flood pagan culture that had originally filled the earth with violence and wickedness and brought about God’s judgment. Therefore, God confused their language and brought an end to their centralized rebellious ambitions, forcing them to split off into different people groups. This ultimately led to the diversity among nations and people groups that we see today—a multiple-origins model based on the Bible that fits perfectly with the scientific data.

The origin of the human races  (creation.com) Concerning the origin of the races, the Bible records that: All men are descendants of the first created man Adam, and the line of all human ancestry passes through Noah.

One Blood  (creation.com) There is really only one race—the human race. Scripture distinguishes people by tribal or national groupings, not by skin color or physical appearances.

Are there really different races?  (answersingenesis) Scientists today admit that, biologically, there really is only one race of humans. For instance, a scientist at the Advancement of Science Convention in Atlanta stated, “Race is a social construct derived mainly from perceptions conditioned by events of recorded history, and it has no basic biological reality.”

Correcting our views on Race  (answersingenesis) We’re all descended from Adam and Eve. So where did all the diversity in our skin shades come from?

One Race  (answersingenesis) The families that scattered from Babel brought different combinations of genes with them. But their physical differences were trivial. We all have the same basic brown pigment, and we belong to one race—the human race—descended from Adam.

One Blood  (answersingenesis) Every human being in the world is classified as Homo sapiens. Scientists today agree that there is really only one biological race of humans.

Skin Color research confirms Biblical narrative  (icr.org) …all people groups share the same basic genome comprised of a well-documented set of common genetic variants.

Cavemen are people, too  (armstronginstitute) According to a May 7, 2010 Science article, the Neanderthal genome sequencing is nearing completion. It is not complete yet, but what scientists have found so far is astounding: Humans and “Neanderthals” are practically identical at the DNA code level… they looked at over 3 billion combinations of four key protein molecules. What did the scientists find? Simply put: Neanderthals are human.

Ancient DNA Discovery supports Biblical Tower of Babel  (faithwire) Harvard-trained research biologist Nathanial Jeanson believes that the discovery unequivocally validates the account given in Genesis 11…

  • The Origin of Languages

The origin of language  (answersingenesis) One of the great mysteries of life is the origin of language. We use it every day to communicate with each other, but how did it begin?

Tower of Babel affirmed by linguistics  (creation.com) Only Genesis provides a credible explanation. It records how God gave the people new languages to speak. Groups speaking the same language moved away together.

What happened at Babel?  (isgenesishistory) Language is such an essential part of our lives, it’s easy to take it for granted. Remove our ability to communicate, and our lives almost stop. Imagine getting an unexpected text in a foreign language, or an email, or picking up the phone and hearing words you don’t understand. It could be unsettling. This must have been the feeling of the people at the tower of Babel.

Hebrew – the oldest known language  (israel365news) It is generally accepted that Egyptian hieroglyphics are one of the oldest forms of written communication, however, this ancient Hebrew discovery is about to rewrite history as we know it. Archaeologist Dr Douglas Petrovich’s study of the inscribed Egyptian stone slabs asserts that the writings are actually an early form of Hebrew. He believes that the stones recall the Bible’s descriptions about the Israelites living in Egypt and concludes that they transformed Egyptian hieroglyphics into Hebrew more than 3,800 years ago. He also found the Biblical figure Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his half-brothers and became the most powerful leader of Egypt after Pharaoh, as well as Joseph’s wife Asenath and their sons Manasseh and Ephraim. Petrovich is proud to use the Bible as his source for proving his translations. “I have no doubt whatsoever that Hebrew is the world’s oldest alphabet.”

  • Black and White Twins!

Two-tone Twins  (creation.com) Believe it or not, these two beautiful little girls are twins… These two little girls help answer one of the questions that has troubled many people about the Bible. If there was just one man and one woman at the beginning then where did all the ‘races’ come from, with their ‘different skin colours’? Remee and Kian prove that it is simply a matter of genetics…

It’s not just Black and White  (answersingenesis) The Singerl twins are a vivid reminder that we are all members of one race… one twin is very dark and the other is very light… all humans basically have the same skin color—a brown pigment called melanin… Lots of brown is called black, and a little brown color is called white. In actuality, no human really is “black” and no human is “white.” There are not different colors but different shades of one basic color, brown.

Black and White Twins  (answersingenesis) what are referred to as “black and white” twins—fraternal twins where one is dark skinned with black hair and the other is light skinned with fair hair. Actually, they both have the same skin color (mainly from the pigment melanin) but different shades (tones) of that color… all humans are descended from Adam and Eve, we’re all one race, or “one blood” as the Apostle Paul puts it in Acts 17:26. This is confirmed by observational science—humans are one species…

Two Colors, One Race  (answersingenesis) Twins of different skin color are now the older siblings of another set of twins of different skin color!

No Pigment of the Imagination  (answersingenesis) Eighteen-year-old Lucy and Maria Aylmer encounter disbelief when they tell people they’re twins—or even that they’re sisters. Lucy has pale skin and straight, ginger hair, while Maria has the coffee skin and rich black curls of their half-Jamaican mother.

THINK SPOT

  • Was Noah still alive?  (creation.com; pdf) Noah had 3 sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Look at this Bible timeline of Shem’s descendants, taking note of the gap between Noah and Abraham. Scripture tells us that Noah lived 350 years after the flood. It is a shock to discover that he died only 3 years before Abraham was born.
  • Scripture also tells us about Nimrod, Noah’s great-grandson through his son, Ham, and the first world dictator. ‘And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel…’
  • Take a look at this simplified chronology. Look at the estimated overlap between Noah and Nimrod, remembering that Abraham was a descendant of Shem, not Ham.
  • Could Noah have still been alive to witness this next rebellion of man at the Tower of Babel?
