The Secret of the Missing Scrolls – Part 7

The Secret of the Missing Scrolls

DEAD SEA SCROLLS ~ PUZZLES FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE

Desert caves, ancient secrets, priceless treasure and invading warriors… continuing on our exciting mystery adventure for kids. Today, there is a panic. The Roman soldiers are coming! The priceless scrolls must go into hiding…

Even though this is a really long apologetics series (with one final post to go), it was not a huge package. Most of the colouring pages and puzzles for this theme relate to working with the scribes at Qumran and learning about the names of the books of the Old Testament, and a brief outline of what each book is about; however I did manage to put together a few more colouring / puzzle pages about the Roman soldiers and archaeology as detailed below and on the final post for this series. Once again, keep these tutorials – make your own puzzles and jazz up your colouring pages – handy as they will guide you through the how-to process. Click here to see part 1 (overview); part 2 (sample letter that you can download for your child); part 3 (article for kids); part 4 (article for kids); part 5 (puzzles) and part 6 (more puzzles) of this adventure series.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS ~ FRAMES / PAGE BORDERS FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE

These frames (portrait or landscape) that I made for my puzzles and colouring pages are available for download here. As stated previously, when I chose this theme I found out very quickly that there was not much around to go with it that I could send to my kids. So I made my own. The previous posts in this series will guide you how you can do that, if you run into a similar situation. For all my puzzles and colouring pages, I also added some Dead Sea Scroll images into each one (not shown) to jazz them up a little and make them more interesting. Maybe a pottery jar in a corner; a scroll or a fragment in another. You choose – and you will find some photo suggestions here or here.

HELP! THE ROMAN SOLDIERS ARE COMING!

Okay, this is part 2 of the ‘mission’ that I gave to my kids for this package. My letter to them outlining their ‘mission’ is available for you to download; or use it as an idea if you would prefer to make your own:

Next, you will zoom ahead in time—nearly 200 years—to 68 A.D. The Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, has come and gone. It has now been 36 years since His resurrection. You are again at Qumran with the scribes, but today there is a great panic. Everyone is in immense danger. The Roman soldiers are coming! Your task is to help the scribes hide all their precious scrolls in caves and then help them escape. There is not much time. Your mission is incredibly dangerous. Your own life is at great risk, however I know that God will give you the help and strength you need to be brave and courageous as you care for others. I am confident that you will succeed.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS ~ COLOURING PAGE FOR KIDS ~ ROMAN SOLDIERS / ARCH OF TITUS

Hmmm… what to do for colouring pages and puzzles? First, I made up one colouring page of Roman Soldiers (a bit of a collage) for my boys, adding a note that these were the same type of soldiers at the foot of the cross. I found some images from these pages and just shrunk them down and combined them all into the one colouring page:  Google | Google | Goodsearch. I also found a colouring page of the Arch of Titus about the Fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Okay, so that was the first part of this section.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS ~ PUZZLE FOR KIDS ~ ROMAN SOLDIERS ARE COMING

Next, I also made up a couple of puzzle pages a bit like this. This photo shown here is a bit of a compilation just to give you the idea.

1. SCROLLS INTO JARS:  For my first puzzle page, I found a ‘match the scroll puzzle’ and a maze in the shape of the Ten Commandments. After recolouring them to make them more interesting (MS Publisher: right click on the puzzle – click ‘format picture’ – click ‘picture’ tab – select ‘recolour’ and then choose the colour you want), I put them inside my colouring page frame with photos of some of the real scrolls, sitting by photos of the real jars they were found in. In a text box, I wrote, The Romans are coming! Find the 3 pairs of Dead Sea Scrolls. Then complete the maze to make sure the scrolls are put in the right clay jars, ready to go into hiding.

2. JARS INTO HIDING: For my second puzzle page, I found a round maze with a blank centre. At the beginning of the maze, I put a photo of some of the real scrolls and real jars. I also found a photo of an ancient Roman siege machine, so I put that in there too; along with an aerial photo of the Qumran area. In my text box I wrote: The Romans are coming!  Quickly! All the priceless scrolls containing God’s Word must be safely inside the cave before the soldiers arrive.

With a little playing, I put a photo of one of the real Qumran cave entrances at the centre of the maze. How? Left click your maze – select ‘set transparent colour’ – click on the white area of your maze. You should now have a completely see-through maze.

Insert the cave entrance photo on top of the maze – right click – select ‘order’ – send to back.  While the photo is still selected, I resized it to fit the round centre of the maze, so that only the cave entrance was showing.

To hide the square edges of the photo: insert shape – ‘donut’ – colour it white. Resize it if you need to, so that it will completely cover your photo. Then right click on the donut shape – click ‘order’ – select ‘send backward’. Now it should fit snugly between your photo and the maze. So you are left with a real photo of a cave entrance at the centre of your maze.  :)

DID YOU KNOW:  Preparations are well under way today to rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. Just as Jesus foretold (and verses 42-44 tell us why), it was destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans and the temple has never been rebuilt, but Jesus, Daniel, Paul and John all make reference to it as once again standing by the mid-point of The Great Tribulation, so it will be rebuilt. Possibly very soon. Read more…
