ARCHAEOLOGY DIG ~ TREASURE IN THE DESERT ~ THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS ARE FOUND!
This is the final part of the letter I sent to my sponsored children:
It is now 1949 AD. You are surprised to discover that you are again back at Qumran, this time digging with an archaeological team. Everyone is buzzing with excitement, talking loudly and openly now about ‘The Dead Sea Scrolls’. As your team searches the desert for hidden treasure, archaeologists Roland De Vaux and Gerald Lankester Harding inspect a photo of broken pottery jars. You look up. In the photo, you can clearly see the jars have been broken and glued back together. You smile as you remember that day in the desert. It was the sound of pottery breaking that you heard! A sound which echoed around the world! What the shepherd found that day and thought was nothing but old scrolls—some wrapped in linen and blackened with age—turned out to be the greatest find of the century! And you were there to witness it! God had kept His Word safe, hidden on dusty scrolls in the desert for more then 2000 years. It was nothing short of a miracle! These scrolls are just like our Old Testament Bible that we read today. This proves that God’s Word CAN be trusted!

ARCHAEOLOGY DIG ~ DRAW AN AERIAL MAP OF WHERE YOU LIVE ~ DRAWING ACTIVITY FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE (A4)
The first activity for this section is a drawing activity I made up for my children. It is ready for you to download and print. All you need to do is add a Qumran aerial photo in the top rectangle. These are the words in the text box:
This is what the archaeology excavation at Khirbet Qumran looks like. That is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Imagine if your town was dug up in a few hundred years time. What would it look like? What would archaeologists find? Have a think about it, then draw an archaeological map of where you live.

ARCHAEOLOGY ~ WORD SEARCH
Next, I found a word search of archaeological Biblical sites (which I just can’t seem to locate at the moment; but you could easily make up a quick wordsearch using some of the sites from a list like this), put it into one of my blank frames, and added this text:
Treasures hidden for THOUSANDS of years. The archaeology professor has forgotten where he put his list of archaeological excavations relating to Biblical times. He knows that a huge number of items and towns have been found. His assistant has left him some clues hidden in this word search puzzle. Help him find them. His assistant has also left these items on the Professor’s desk as extra ‘clues’. [i.e. two Qumran postcards + Peanuts comic strip – see below]

I also turned this Peanuts Comic Strip of the Dead Sea Scrolls into another fun postcard as one of the professor’s clues left on his desk by his assistant. Here is the original (B&W) by Charles Schulz from 1962. I sent the colour version to my kids.
