HELP! THE ROMAN SOLDIERS ARE COMING!

Even though this is a really long series to explain, it was not a huge package. Most of the colouring pages and puzzles for this theme related to working with the scribes at Qumran and learning about the books of the Old Testament. Okay, now we are in part 2 of the ‘mission’ that I gave to my kids. This section of my letter to them reads as follows:

Next, your time machine will zoom ahead nearly 200 years—to 68 AD. The Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, has come and gone. It has been 36 years since His resurrection. You are again at Qumran with the scribes, but today there is a great panic. Everyone is in immense danger. The Roman soldiers are coming! Your task is to help the scribes hide all their precious scrolls in caves, and then help them escape. There is not much time. Your mission is incredibly dangerous. Your own life is at great risk, however God will give you the help and strength you need to be brave and courageous as you care for others. I am confident that you will succeed.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS ~ COLOURING PAGES FOR KIDS ~ ROMAN SOLDIERS / ARCH OF TITUS

1. Hmmm… what to do for colouring and puzzle pages? First, I made up one colouring page of Roman Soldiers as a bit of a collage for my boys, adding a note that these were the same type of soldiers at the foot of the cross. I shrunk them down and combined them into the one colouring page.

2. I also found a colouring page of the Arch of Titus about the Fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Okay, so that was the first part of this section.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS ~ PUZZLES FOR KIDS ~ THE ROMAN SOLDIERS ARE COMING

1. Scrolls into Jars:  Now, puzzles. For my first puzzle page, I found a ‘match the scroll’ puzzle (from Biblewise) and a maze in the shape of the Ten Commandments. After recolouring them to make them more interesting (using MS Publisher: right click on the puzzle – click ‘format picture’ – click ‘picture’ tab – select ‘recolour’ and then choose the colour you want), I put them inside my colouring page frame with photos of some of the real Dead Sea Scrolls, sitting by photos of the real jars they were found in. In a text box, I wrote:

The Romans are coming! Find the 3 pairs of Dead Sea Scrolls. Then complete the maze to make sure the scrolls are put in the right clay jars, ready to go into hiding.

*

2. Jars into Hiding:  For my second puzzle page, I found a blank, round maze with a blank centre. At the beginning of the maze, I put a photo of some of the real scrolls and real jars. I found a photo of an ancient Roman siege machine, so I put that in there, too; along with an aerial photo of the Qumran area. With a little playing, I put a photo of one of the real Qumran cave entrances at the centre of the maze. How? Using MS Publisher, left click your maze – select ‘set transparent colour’ – click on the white area of your maze. You should now have a completely see-through maze. Insert the cave entrance photo on top of the maze – right click – select ‘order’ – send backward. While the photo is still selected, I resized it to fit the round centre of the maze, so that only the actual cave entrance was showing. To hide the square edges of the photo:  insert shape – ‘donut’ – colour it white. Resize it if you need to, so that it will completely cover your photo. Then right click on the donut shape – click ‘order’ – send backward. Now it should fit snugly between your photo and the maze. So you are left with a real photo of a cave entrance at the centre of your maze and it should look something like this. In my text box, I wrote:

The Romans are coming!  Quickly! All the priceless scrolls containing God’s Word must be safely inside the cave before the soldiers arrive.
