- Why are there two family trees of Jesus Christ in the Bible?
- Why is Joseph listed in both family trees?
- What is the ‘seed of the woman’ that is mentioned in Genesis chapter 3? Isn’t it the man who provides the seed?
- What is the virgin birth all about? Why did Jesus have to be born of a virgin?
- If Jesus is the King of kings, what happened to His throne? Didn’t the Angel Gabriel promise that Jesus would rule on the throne of King David?
PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS
Okay, I’m starting to think about Christmas. Are you? So I will be having a break from The Secret of the Missing Scrolls series for a few days until I get this year’s Christmas items out. How did you go with the quiz? Each Christmas, I try to concentrate on a particular aspect of the Christmas Nativity story. This year, I want to concentrate on the genealogy of Jesus Christ and deal with some of these questions I used to find puzzling until I was introduced to the fabulous ministry of Dr Chuck Missler. I try to slip as much apologetics information in as I can when I write to my kids so that they will know that the Bible is REAL history, starting with God as Creator of the universe. As Dr Chuck is fond of saying, over the years he has had to adjust his thinking many times. ALWAYS it has been in the direction of taking the Scriptures more literally. And that goes for me, too. If I can give my kids a head start over the hurdles… imagine the possibilities!
THE KING OF KINGS IS BORN ~ ARTICLE FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE
First up, I’ve done a free printable Christmas article for my Compassion kids, along similar lines as the Jesus – the most Royal Baby ever article. This one is titled ‘The King of Kings is Born – The Genealogy of Jesus Christ’ and it deals with those tricky questions in the pop quiz above. You will find the article text at the end of this post. As usual I have laminated it and will be sending an extra copy for their Compassion teacher, with a sticky note on it to remind them to give it to them. This free printable Christmas article for kids is available in both English and French.
FAMILY TREE OF JESUS CHRIST
Plus I will laminate and send them this free printable genealogy chart of Jesus Christ (the one with the cross), as it shows very clearly and simply how the family trees dovetail ~ before and after King David.
Calvary Chapel have put out some great free printable Nativity puzzle booklets (scroll down the page to numbers NT001 to NT011) where the angels look like they have come from a modern day superhero comic. Each one also has a colouring page from the same artist who has done the Action Bible. They are also available in Spanish. The one I will be sending this year is: Joseph & Mary genealogy (NT002).
I’ve made up a free printable 2015 calendar with a Bible verse that I will release sometime over the next few days. Beyond that… I’m still thinking. A couple of Nativity colouring pages, a Nativity craft maybe. I went a bit overboard last year. I’m keeping it simple this year. What are you sending to your kids?
THE KING OF KINGS IS BORN – THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS CHRIST
MEMORY VERSE: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgement and with justice from henceforth even forever. Isaiah 9:6-7
Have you ever tried to draw your family tree? Write down your name on a piece of paper. Then write down the names of your parents, then the names of their parents, and then the names of their parents, and so on. Go back as far as you can. This is called a family tree. How far did you get? Did you know that the complete family tree of Jesus Christ is written down in the Bible and goes all the way back to Adam and Eve?! Joseph’s family tree is recorded in Matthew 1. He was the legal father of Jesus Christ. Mary’s family tree is recorded in Luke 3. She was a normal girl, chosen for a very special task. Both of them were from the royal family of King David. This proves that Jesus Christ was an heir to the throne of King David.
King David was a good king, but the kings after him were mostly pretty bad and led the people into sin. God eventually got so fed up with the lot of them, that He sent the people of Israel into captivity and put a blood curse on King Jeconiah and his royal line (Jeremiah 22:30). Oh no! This was the royal line that (Joseph and) the promised Messiah was to come from. How would God get around it? Watch and see how clever God is.
Did you notice that Joseph’s name is in both family trees? In Numbers 27, the law of Moses had something strange in it. If a man had no sons, his daughter could inherit if she married someone from her own tribe. It seems that Mary’s father had no sons. Mary married Joseph. They were both from the tribe of Judah. So Mary’s father was able to legally adopt Joseph as his own son. And being born of a virgin, Jesus Christ was able to inherit the throne of King David without the blood curse that came through King Jeconiah! Isn’t God clever?!
Way back in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3), God (the Creator) declared war on Satan (the ruler of this world) and promised to send a Messiah to rescue us from his power. Jesus is like the ultimate superhero. God said, “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed…”
[Wait a minute…! It is the man who provides the seed. And note that there are two seeds here – one referring to the pseudo-Christ or anti-Christ; the other referring to the Messiah.]
So right back then, God gave us the first clue that it would be a virgin birth. Every time God gave us another clue, the Evil One would target his attacks, desperate to try and stop the birth of the Messiah. Each time, God would outsmart him. God had it all figured out right from the very beginning. Just as He has the future—no matter how scary it may sometimes look—all figured out, too. The Angel Gabriel promised Mary that Jesus Christ would rule on the throne of King David. However, when Jesus was born, there was no throne of David. But there will be. One day very soon, He promised to come back to complete His mission. I can’t wait! Can you?!
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us. Matthew 1:23
Christmas is when we celebrate the biggest royal countdown ever!
Jesus was the most special royal baby to be born!
The countdown for Jesus’ birth lasted 4000 years!
Why a virgin birth? by Dr Chuck Missler – an incredible checkmate master stroke on God’s behalf; and the basis for this article that I did for my kids
Christmas tons of FREE printable Nativity colouring pages, puzzles, crafts, paper gifts, posters and more for kids
If you’ve ever been curious about the 3 missing kings from Matthew’s genealogy who were blotted out of the legal record due to their idolatry; the blood curse that God put on Jeconiah’s royal line where the Messiah was to come from and how He could only overcome this difficulty with a virgin birth; the adoption of Joseph as the son of Heli; plus the temporary convergence of the two genealogies of Jesus Christ…
And most importantly, when you write to your Compassion child this Christmas, don’t forget to tell them that the God of the Old Testament who organised all this is the same person who walked the dusty streets of first century Israel; who was born as a tiny baby who grew up to die on the cross for the penalty of our sins… :)
