A BIT OF BACKGROUND
How did you go with the quiz? Each Christmas, I try to concentrate on a particular aspect of the Christmas Nativity story. This year, I want to concentrate on the genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ and deal with some of these tricky questions that I used to find puzzling until I was introduced to the fabulous ministry of Chuck Missler. I try to slip as much apologetics information in as I can when I write to my kids so that they will know that the Bible is REAL history, starting with God as Creator of the universe. As Dr Chuck is fond of saying, over the years he has had to adjust his thinking many times… ALWAYS it has been in the direction of taking the Scriptures more seriously. And that goes for me, also. If I can give my kids a head start over the hurdles… imagine the possibilities of what God could do in their life.

Why a Virgin birth? (Dr Chuck Missler) an incredible checkmate, master stroke on God’s behalf; and the basis for this article that I did for my kids. If you’ve ever been curious about the 3 missing kings from Matthew’s genealogy who were blotted out of the legal record due to their idolatry; the blood curse that God put on Jeconiah’s royal line where the Messiah was to come from and how He could only overcome this difficulty with a virgin birth; the adoption of Joseph as the son of Heli; plus the temporary convergence of the two genealogies of Jesus Christ… lots of great information here.
Genealogy of Jesus Christ – FREE poster (amazingBibletimeline) showing the family tree of Jesus Christ. I sent the one with the cross to my kids, as it shows very clearly and simply how both family trees dovetail before and after King David; free printable

THE KING OF KINGS IS BORN – THE GENEALOGY OF JESUS CHRIST
MEMORY VERSE: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. Isaiah 9:6-7
Have you ever tried to draw your family tree? Write down your name on a piece of paper. Then write down the names of your parents, then the names of their parents, and the names of their parents, and so on. Go back as far as you can. This is called a family tree. Did you know that the family tree of Jesus Christ is written down in the Bible and goes all the way back to Adam and Eve?! His family tree through Joseph is recorded in Matthew 1. He was the legal father of Jesus Christ. Mary’s family tree is recorded in Luke 3. Both of them were from the royal family of King David. This proves that Jesus Christ was a legal heir to the throne of King David.
Now, King David was a good king, but the kings after him were mostly pretty bad and led the people into sin. God eventually got so fed up with all of them that He sent the people of Israel into captivity, and put a blood curse on King Jeconiah and all of his descendants (Jeremiah 22:30). Oh no! This was the family that God had promised the Messiah was to come from. What would He do now? Watch and see how clever God is.
Did you notice that Joseph’s name is in both family trees? Here’s why. In Numbers 27, it was recorded in the law of Moses that if a man had no sons, his daughter could inherit, but only if she married someone from her own tribe. Mary and Joseph were both from the tribe of Judah. It appears that Mary’s father had no sons. So Mary’s father, Heli, was able to legally adopt Joseph as his own son when Mary married Joseph. And because she was a virgin, Jesus Christ was legally able to inherit the throne of King David, without the blood curse that came through King Jeconiah to Joseph. And that’s why it had to be a virgin birth! Isn’t God amazing!
Way back in the Garden of Eden, in Genesis 3, God the Creator declared war on satan, the ruler of this world. God promised to send us a Messiah—the ultimate superhero—to rescue us from satan’s power. God said, “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed…” [Wait a minute… It is the man who provides the seed. And note that there are two seeds here – one referring to the pseudo-Christ or anti-Christ; the other referring to the Messiah.]
So right back then, God gave us the first clue that it would be a virgin birth. Every time God gave us another clue, the Evil One would target his attacks on that family, desperate to try and stop the birth of the Messiah. Each time, God would outsmart him. God had it all figured out right from the very beginning! Just as He has our future—no matter how scary it may sometimes look—all figured out, too. Back to Joseph and Mary. The angel Gabriel promised Mary that Jesus Christ would rule on the throne of King David. However, when Jesus was born, there was no throne of David. But there will be. One day very soon, He promised to come back to complete His mission. I can’t wait! Can you?!

And most importantly, when you write to your sponsored child this Christmas, don’t forget to tell them that the God of the Old Testament who organised all this, is the same person who walked the dusty streets of first century Israel; the Creator who was born as a tiny baby who grew up to die on the cross for the penalty of our sins so that all who believe in Him will have everlasting life…
