Do you have woodpeckers near you? They’ve always fascinated me. Any bird that can bash its head on a tree all day at the speed of a machine gun without getting a giant headache is definitely worthy of attention. Moving their head faster than a speeding bullet, did you know that they hammer faster than a sub-machine gun and experience 250 times more force than a rocket lift off? Their beak should crumple, their skull should crack, and its brain should end up mush. So how do they do it? Headache pills? Superhero? No. Let’s have a look at the many incredible design features God has given them. And unless ALL of these features are there AND working correctly from the very start, NONE of it will work! This is called ‘irreducible complexity’. In this post you will find FREE Woodpecker colouring pages, puzzles, crafts and creative ideas… enjoy!

BIBLE VERSES
Job 12:7 But ask now the beasts and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air and they shall tell thee. Or speak to the earth and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knows not in all these that the hand of the LORD has wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
Matthew 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are ye not much better than they?
Job 35:11 Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

WOODPECKER ~ INFORMATION FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE (A4)
Woodpecker – FREE article for kids (Paper Gifts for Estefany) giving glory to God as Creator; also available in French; free printable
Woodpecker – fun facts for kids (answersingenesis) A woodpecker can peck holes into trees without getting a headache because it is designed with a “cushion” in its head, which is actually a special muscle that absorbs the shock of the bill pounding the tree; from scientists who take the Bible seriously
Knock Knock who’s not there (answersingenesis) Woodpeckers are striking birds that live on many continents. They have sharp, pointed beaks used to drill through the bark of trees (and sometimes houses). Once the woodpecker has drilled a deep enough hole, he uses his long tongue to spear or catch insects and beetle larvae; from scientists who take the Bible seriously
Woodpecker, head-banging wonder (creation.com) Woodpeckers hammer wood with their bills. They drill holes in trees when foraging, or to excavate storage holes or cavity nests. The pecking impact forces are huge. The woodpecker’s head suddenly comes to an abrupt halt when the beak hits the wood, resulting in deceleration forces of the order of 1,200 g (i.e. 1,200 times the force of gravity). In stark contrast, just 300 g will leave a human concussed or with serious brain injury. Some woodpeckers might even be able to tolerate impact forces up to 6,000 g! And this is repeated head-bashing—around 18 to 22 times per second; from scientists who take the Bible seriously.
Pileated Woodpecker – fun facts for kids (answersingenesis) Woodpeckers are excellent tree climbers, having two backward facing toes, sharp claws, and stiff tail feathers, which are used as a prop while climbing; from scientists who take the Bible seriously
Woodpeckers inspire Designers (icr.org) When boring into wood in search of food, a woodpecker exerts so much force with each strike that its beak should crumble, its skull should crack, and its brain should be reduced to mush. However, a suite of design features absorbs the shock and ensures that these tragedies do not happen. How are these features able to provide such effective protection? From scientists who take the Bible seriously.
Birdbrained breakthrough (answersingenesis) How can we better protect athletes from concussions? A newly discovered woodpecker design may help; from scientists who take the Bible seriously.

WOODPECKER ~ PUZZLES FOR KIDS ~ FREE PRINTABLE
Woodpecker – puzzle worksheet (Paper Gifts for Estefany) with a brain teaser twist. The woodpecker is confused. Someone has told him he was NOT specially designed by God, but has somehow ‘evolved’ all his incredible features by accident. Help him think about it while he pecks his way through the tree. Help him organise his features into a logical order to see if he could have somehow survived while he evolved them all. Remember, he has to be able to survive while he develops only one special feature at a time. It is no good if he can drill a hole, but starves because he can’t get the bug. Conclusion: God had to create the woodpecker with all these features there and working correctly or he could not have survived. When I sent this to my kids, I sent about 5 or 6 copies so they could discuss it with their family and friends. This puzzle is also available in French.
Design your own woodpecker puzzle Creative idea: I took a blank round maze (that looks like a tree) and added a woodpecker colouring page on one side of my maze and shrunk it down, then put a woodpecker mate on the other.

Very cool. My yard is blessed with 4 different varieties of woodpeckers. My husband thinks its a curse because in nesting season we are forever chasing them off the sides of our house. They make nice big holes in the house if you let them. The electric pole at the bottom of our driveway was so full of acorns and riddled with nesting holes that it had lost structure strength and was in danger of coming down in a storm. So the electric company replaced it with a new metal pole, impervious to wood peckers. They LOVE it. They can’t hide acorns or make nests in it, but they will bang away on that pole all day long. Males use the loud banging noise to attract a female. They show off their bravado by the volume of the pecking. The louder the bird pecks, presumably the stronger and better provider he will be. The metal pole is so loud it can be heard all over the neighborhood. The electric company gave the woodpecker males a virtual microphone to announce “Hey ladies! Check me out!” They love that pole!
