THINK SPOT

Does your child know that there were more than three magi? The Bible tells us there were three GIFTS, not three men. The Magi were political king-makers (from our term ‘magistrates’) with a dual priestly role, carrying expensive gifts over a long distance. It would have been a large political delegation. And even though many Nativity scenes depict the mysterious magi arriving just after the birth of the Lord Jesus, a careful reading of Matthew 2 tells us that He was more than likely somewhere up to 2 years old by the time they arrived in Bethlehem.

It was therefore a group of Persian-Parthian “king makers” who entered Jerusalem in the latter days of the reign of Herod. Herod’s reaction was understandably one of fear the sudden appearance of the Magi, probably traveling in force with every imaginable oriental pomp and accompanied by adequate cavalry escort to insure their safe penetration of Roman territory, certainly alarmed Herod and the populace of Jerusalem…”

HOW ABOUT SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT?

Looking for something a little different? Put the birth of Jesus into a real history timeline with this Bible Timeline – card game  (livingwaterBiblegames). Designed to go with this Bible history timeline, it consists of 24 Bible event cards and 9 action cards. As children (ages 7+) play with their friends (2 – 6 players) they place the cards in order to learn the overall flow of Biblical history; 2 different levels of difficulty; includes blank cards so you can add extra Bible events; share with your child the history of the world from Adam to Abraham to King David to the Lord Jesus to your family to… you!; free printable

You may like to include this Adam to Jesus – family tree poster  (amazingBibletimeline) in the shape of a cross, showing the two royal lineages of Jesus: one through his legal father, Joseph (the official royal line through King David’s son, Solomon, as detailed in the book of Matthew) and one through Mary (royal bloodline through King David’s son, Nathan, as detailed in the book of Luke). This poster makes it really easy to see at a glance who belongs where. I’m sending this to my kids this year; free printable

Photos of Bethlehem  (Bibleplaces) photos and information about where the Lord Jesus Christ was born, fulfilling over 300 very specific prophecies given over 4000 years.

Journey to Bethlehem – dinner  (havingfunathome) Katey shares a beautiful family tradition, holding a “Journey to Bethlehem” dinner on Christmas Eve to think about Joseph and Mary’s long trip before Jesus was born. Eating foods that they would have been likely to eat, e.g. figs, dates, olives, goat cheese, nuts, grape juice, dried meat. Turning off the lights and using only candles and lanterns, setting an intimate family atmosphere. Reading the Christmas story from the Bible, singing some Christmas hymns, then talk about family memories. For a bigger adventure, they once filled the floor with straw and slept on it overnight. Now THAT was a memory!

Journey to Bethlehem – passport sticker book  (fun365; scroll down to number 5) an engaging way to teach your Sunday School Christmas lesson is to give each student their own Nativity passport. The first page has a spot for their picture and name. Then, as you teach the Christmas story, and they read the passages on each page and complete the crafts, activities, puzzles, colouring pages, etc, you have for them, students can get their passport “stamped” by adding stickers to each page; for purchase
